SURFACE-WORKING MACHINE.
` Specicatonof Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. s, 1919.
Appneatipn mee June 12, 191e. serial No. 103,273.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROYAL REUBEN MIL- Lnr., a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of` Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surface-VVorking Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved form of surface working machine yof the rotary type; to provide improved means vwhereby the pressure of the operating tool (of the device) on the surfaceoperated upon may be varied within wide limits by causing more or less of the weight of the machine -tofbe borne by either such tool or the supporting framev of the machine; and to provide a cleaning machine in which the cleaning apparatus may be yieldingly adjusted with respect to the surface to which it is applied.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the cleaning machine equipped with `carborundum stones for cleaning devices. j
Fig. 2 is a top plan of the same with part of the housing removed. s
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the cleaning machine `equipped with a scrubbing brush as the cleaning medium.
Fig. 4 is a top plan of the same.
Fig. 5 is a detail showing the yieldingly adjustable means.
The general type of cleaning machine is disclosed and a detailed description of how7 the electric driving motor is mounted within the housing and is connected to the cleaning device may be found in my copending application, Serial No. 103,274 filed of even date herewith. Y
1n the construction shown in the drawings the cleaning machine comprises a housing 1 within which is mounted an electric motor.
A circular plate 2 driven by such electric motor is journaled on the under side of the housing and is adapted to have various working tools such as carborundum stones 3 or a scrubbing brush 4 attachedthereto.
Means are provided for adjustably supporting the housing containing the electric motor whereby the amount of pressure borne on the cleaningapparatus may be varied at will, and comprises a framework 5 adapted to surround the housing 1 and provided with suitable supports such as the casters 6 or rollers 7.
Yieldingly adjustable connection between the frame 5 and housing 1 is provided by means of a yoke 8 fulcrumed at 9 on upstanding lugs 10 of frame 5, the branches of said yoke embracing the housingand having pivotal connection therewith by means of studs 11 mounted on a band or hoop 12 which surrounds and grips the housing. rEhe hoop 12 may be clamped about the casing at various heights. for the purpose of regulating the distancev between the disk 2 and the surface 'operated upon.` This method of pivotally mounting-the machine on pivots having an aXis transverse to the direction of travel of the machine permits a rocking movement whereby the working tool will bear pivotally upon a surface which has depressions or the like therein.
The shank 13 of said yoke is mounted in a vertical guideway 14 on frame 5 and yield- 'mg adjustment thereof is secured by means of a compression spring 15 and hand wheel 16 having a threaded stem 17 and foot 18 for bearing down on said shank.
ln the operation of the device, any amount of pressure from a light contact to the full weight of motor and housing may be put upon the cleaning device by turning the hand wheel 16 and actuating the shank 18 of yoke S.
This wide range of adjustment is very desirable when various kinds of cleaning de* vices are used. When carborundum stones are being used on the cleaner, it is usually desirable to have a considerable weight bearing down upon them. Such weight, however, would be entirely unsatisfactory when a scrubbing brush such as shown in Fig. 3 is used in scrubbing floors and rugs. If the amount of weight necessary for proper use of the carborundum stones were placed upon this brush, the bristles would be bent and broken and would not give efcient and satisfactory service. The framework shown in Fig. 4 is slightly modified so that rollers 7 may be used when the machine is operated on rugs and the like, as casters such as shown in Fig. 1 bear down deeply into the surface of such rug and make the machine very hard to move from one position to another.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention is herein shown and described, it Will be understood that the construction may be 'altered and details omitted Without departing from thespirit of this inventionas defined by the following claims.
I claim Y l. A device of the class described comprising driving means, a surface Working'apparatus supported from and actuated by said driving means, a supporting frame, a yoke havingvthe branches` thereof fulcrumed on said frame, said driving means being supported on and between. said branches, a guideway mounted onf said frame adapted to' receive the shank of said yoke, and an adjustableyielding; means mounted on said guideWay for controlling the position of saidf yoke shank. k v
2. A device of the class described comprising"drivingv means, a surface Working apparatus supported from andvactuatedr by said driving: means, .a supporting frame, ay yoke having the brancheslthereof fulcrumed on `said frame, said dri-ving means being supportedV on andv between said branches, a
guideway mounted on said frame adapted to receive the shank of said yoke, a compressionV` spring slidably mounted on said guide- Way-inV position to bear against said shank, and means for adjusting said spring along saidv guidevvay;
3. A device of the class described comprising driving means, a surface'y Working apparatus supported from and actuated by said driving means, a supporting frame, a yoke having the branchesthereof fulcrumed onV said frame, said ,drivingy means being supported on. andv betweenl said branches, a guidewa mounted on'saidl frame adapted to receive t e shank of said4 yoke, a compression spring slidably mounted onA said guide- Way in position to have one end thereof bear against said shank, a stem having threaded engagement With said guidevvay, a foot on .said stem'for bearing againstthe other end i of saidf spring, and a handvvheel on said stem.W
Signedv at Chicago this 26th day 1916;
