6. WaM/v! /m %;;M/ w WW UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn JOHN PATER SO N, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY. v
KMPROVEMENT IN BOATS FOR TRANSPORTING NIGHT-SOIL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,982, dated July 30, 1872,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PATERSON, of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Night- Soil Boats; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which draw- 1ng-- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same in the plane a: m, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of compartments in the end of a boat, said compartments being separated from the central compartment or compartments by bulkheads, provided with openings, which are situated at about the middle of the bight of said bulk-heads and protected by strainers, in combination with pumps, the suction-pipes of which extend down into the end compartments, while their discharge -pipes lead out in the open water in such a manner that when the night-soil is dumped into the central compartment or compartments of the boat the liquid portion thereof, as soon as the same rises up to the openings in the bulkheads leading into the end compartments, flow over into these compartments, whence the same can be readily removed by the pumps; and by these means the boat can be charged with solid matter free from liquid, and the number of trips required for removing a certain quantity of night-soil is materially reduced.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a boat, which is provided with compartments B B at its ends and one or more compartments, 0, in the middle. The end compartments B B are separated from the central compartment or compartments by bulk-heads a a, which are provided with. apertures b b, situated at or about the middle of the height of said bulk-heads, and protected by screens 0 c, of wire-netting or other suitable material. The central compartment 0 may be divided in a'series of subdivisions by a longitudinal bulk-head, d, and one or more transverse bulk-heads, e, and the end compartments may also be subdivided by bulk-heads f; and if such subdivisions are made the bulk-heads 01 cf are provided with apertures g, near their bottoms. The object of these subdivisions is to strengthen the boat and to prevent the contents of the same from surging. In the deck of the boat are hatchways D, which lead into the central compartment, and through which the night-soil is dumped into the boat. As the material which is dumped into the central compartment rises therein the liquid mixed therewith ascends to the top and flows over through the apertures b I) into the end compartments, which are provided with pumps E E, the discharge-pipes h h of which extend out through the sides of the boat (see Fig. 2) and down beneath the water-line.
.By means of these pumps the liquid can easily be removed from the end compartments, and, as the same while being pumped out discharges beneath the water-line, all unpleasant odor is avoided. The principal object of my invention, however, is to remove from the boat all the liquid parts which cannot be employed usefully in the manufacture of poudrette, and to retain only the solid parts; and by removing the liquid parts while the boat is being loaded I am enabled to carry an increased percentage of solid matter, and the number of trips required to remove a certain quantity of night-soil can be reduced.
It must be remarked that one or more com partments for receiving the liquid might be arranged in the middle of the boat but this arrangement would be substantially the same as that shown in my drawing.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement, in a boat, of one or more compartments, provided with pumps, and which communicate with the remaining compartment or compartments by overflow open- This specification signed by me this 7th day ings, said openings being protected by strainof June, 1.872.
ers, whereby the solid matter introduced in- J OHN PATERSON. to a compartment will be retained therein, 1
while the liquid that runs into the adjacent Witnesses:
compartment may be readily pumped out, sub- W. HAUFF, I
stantially as herein set forth. E. F. KASTENHUBER.
