PAPER BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1919.
Application filed January 13, 1917. Serial No. 142,292.
.aims particularly to provide a boxor container in the shape of a grip or satchel which may be formed from a single piece of mate= rial and folded or creased into, form.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention, although it is to be understood that the invention may appear in other forms.
Figure l is a plan view of the paper blank from which the box structure is formed;
gig. 2 is'an end view of the box set up; an
Fig. 3 is a side view of the box showing in dotted lines the position occupied by one of the end flaps while the box is being filled.
In providing a box or container for small quantities of goods, particularly such goods as candy and the like, a neat and attractive container or box is very valuable. The box which I shall describe as an embodiment of my invention takes the form of. a satchel having suitable handles by which to carry the same, these handles being formed integral with the walls of the box. The blank from which the box is formed comprises essentially the bottom portion 1 and the side walls 2 and 3. The end space is closed ofi by means of the end flaps 4 and 5. Handles 6' and 7 are formed integral with the side walls 2 and 3, respectively, and a closing flap 8 is formed integral with one of the side walls 3 and is adapted to fold over the upper edge of the opposite side wall 2. The closing flap 8 is provided with a tongue 9 which is adapted to enter a slot or slit 10 to hold the closing flap in place. One of the side portions 2 is provided with tabs or straps 11 and 12 which are suitably formed to cooperate with the slits 13 and 14 formed in the opposite wall 3.
A tight and serviceable box may be made of only the elements which I have so far described, but in orderto improve the appearance and operation of the box, I have provided the flaps 15 and 16 upon the side portion 2 and the flaps l7 and 18 upon the side portion 3. These flaps are adapted to be folded into the inside of the box and in doing so they tend to keep the corners tightly closed and tend to keep the side walls from bulging out due to the additional strength which they afford. I have also provided the end portions with side flaps 19, 20 on the end portion 4: and 21, 22 on the end portion 5. These endflaps like the side flaps tend to keep the corners of the end walls 4 and 5 straight and to reinforce the same, also tending to make the corners of the box more tight. If it is desired to carry a liquid or semi-liquid substance which might leak out of the corners of the box, I form the end flaps integral with the side flaps providing only a fold between these parts. As this modification is obvious to those skilled in the art, I have not found it necessary to illustrate the same. v
I find also that the side flaps 15, 16, 17 and 18 may be dispensedwith and the end flaps retained or vice versa but I find it preferable in most cases toretain the end flaps in order to strengthen these end flaps 4. and 5 and to keep the corners tight.
Folding and filling of the box is accomplished as follows: The side portions 2 and 3 are folded up on the dotted lines a and b the handles 6'and 7 being brought up flat against each. other. At the same time the flap 23 which may be retained for keeping the top tight is folded over on the line 0 upon the inside of the box. The closing flap 9 is then folded over on the line b and the tongue 9 is inserted into the slot 10. The flaps 15 and 17 on the side walls 2 and 3 are then folded in on the lines 6 and f. The flaps 19 and 20 upon the end portion 4 are then folded on the dotted lines 9 and h and the end portion 1 is folded in upon the dotted line 2' thereby closing off the one end.
The retaining strap 11 is then folded on the dotted line 7' and la and the tongue 24 of this flap is inserted in the slit 13 in the opposite side wall thus securely strapping in the top of the end portion 4: as can be seen in Fig. 2.
At this stage the opposite end of the box is open and the candy, or other material. which is to be inserted is then introduced into the box and thereafter the flaps 16 and 18 are folded in on the line Z and m and the flaps 21 and 22 are folded in on the lines a and 0 and the end portion 5 is folded on the line p to close the end of the box. The strap 12 is then folded on the lines 9 and 1", and the tongue 25 is inserted in the slit 14: thus completely closing the box. As above explained the flap 23' may be dispensed with.
Similarly the flaps on the side portions and on the end portions may be wholly or partially dispensed with.
What I claim is:
l. A blank for forming a paper box out and scored to form a rectangular bottom portion, rectangular sides joined to the bottom along its side edges and adapted to be formed up with their free edges in contact to form a box, triangular end portions joined at their bases to the ends of the bottom portion, and adapted to be formed up to close the ends of the box, a handle formed on the outer edge of each side portion, the two handles being adapted to cooperate to form a complete handle member when the sides are formed up with their outer edges in contact, a locking flap within one handle, and a cooperative slot in the other side member, whereby when the box is formed, said locking flap can embrace the outer edge of the opposite side member to interlock with same to hold the free edges of the sides together, a locking strap at each end on one of the side members, adjacent to its outer edge and a cooperative slot in the opposite side member at each end for interlockment with said straps, whereby when the box is formed the straps can embrace the tops of the end members and lock the two sides of the box together.
i 2. A paper box comprising a rectangular bottom; portion, rectangular sides joined to the bottom along its side edges with their outer edges contacting with each other, and said sides extending at an acute angle to each other, triangular shaped end members joined at their bases to the ends of the bottom portion and closing the ends of the box, integral straps extending fromv the upper portion of one of the side members across the upper ends of the end members, and having their ends in interlocking engagement with the opposite side member, integral handles extending from the upper edges of the side members and contacting with each other, and a flap member within one of said handle members embracing the upper edge of the opposite side and formed for interlocking engagement therewith to hold the flap in bent position.
3. In a paper box, two side members having their adjacent edges in contact, and said side members extending at an acute angle to each other, a tongue integral with one side, bent over the adjacent edge of the other side, and the free end of the tongue tucked into a slot in the other side, thereby retaining said flap bent over said edge of the opposite thereby retaining said flap bent overthe edge of the opposite member and said box closed.
5. A blank for a paper box scored and cut to form a rectangular bottom, rectangular sides having integral handles projecting at their outer edges, a slot within oneof the handles forming a flap, said blank scored at the junction ofsaid flap with the side adapting the flap to be bent over the outer edge of the opposite side, a projecting tongue on the outer end of the flap, a slot in the opposite side to receive said tongue, triangular end members for closing the ends of the box, tongues projecting from the upper part of one of said sides having lateral projections at their ends, the opposite side having slots to receive said tongues, the projections engaging the ends of said slots, said tongues beingadapted to embrace the narrow ends of said triangular end members to retain the end members in closed position.
6. A triangular shaped paper box having sides extending at an acute angle to each other and provided with integral handles on their contacting edges, means within the handles for locking said sides together, integral triangular shaped ends for the box, and means integral with the box and independent of the lock within the handles for locking said triangular ends in box closing position.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 11th day of January, A. D. 1917.
