My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in serving apparatus. Arleading object of the invention is to provide means for dispensing toilet-paper from a holder, the holder being of thattype which is supplied with means for preventing the .roll of paper from being removed bodily from the mandrel after the roll has once been put in place in the holder, said holder' having, also, means of preventing the spinning or paying olf too rapidly of the paper from the roll, and vlikewise preventing the y abstraction of the roll.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists `4of' the/parts and the constructions, arrangements and combinationsof parts which I shall hereinafter describe and claim. l

In carrying out my invention, I employ a suitable support. This will depend somewhat on the position the device is to occupy when in use and hence the design of said support will be subject to more or less modification. In any event, the support will preferably include a pair of standards A outstanding from a suitable base, which may be a wall or other surface to which the holder is fixed. The outer ends of the standards are formed with openings a which provide bearings for appropriate locking pins,`

which I shall hereinafter describe. Between the standards, A, the core or mandrel B is mounted. This may be made of wood or other appropriate material, said core or mandrel having a diameter adapted more or less to that of the usual card-board tube or cylinder, C, with which the roll of paper,

. D, is usually supplied, whereby the roll may be' readily slipped over thev core or mandrel when assembling the device for use.v

so that' said holes will readily admit the locking pins, D. These pins form the journals of the core ormandrel and they arel v each formed with al circumferential'groove' o. springs, E, whose outerv ends are bent at `about right angles to the length of the? spring andare ladapted to be registered with andv to enter the "aforesaid kerfs or slots d and be engaged in or with the annular grooves cyformed in the locking pins, 'whereby said pins lare locked against withdrawal,y As `the springs are bowed, it will be manifest that the act of forcing the coreor -mandrelinto the central tube of the rolly of paper, will result in attening or depressing the springs and thus forcing the bent ends thereof into the kerfs or slots c and into locking engagelment with the groovesI of the locking pins.

This operation secures the pins against removal and prevents the roll of paper `from being removed until the entire contents thereof have been unwound, and the remaining card-board tube is destroyed, whichlatter act is necessary to release the bowed springs for they must be allowed to expand to withdraw their endsout of locking engagement with the pins.

The end of the core or mandrel is also provided with an arm F, counterweighted if desired, and on the inner face of one of the standards A is a fixed lug c. As the paper is pulled forward to detachl a sheetit being understood that the web of paper is usuallyl weakened or scored at points to form separate sheets-the core or mandrel is partially rotated and the arm F is moved with the core, backward and upward, and until it strikes the lug e, when further rotation of the core is prevented. The continued pull on theweb now detaches a sheet of paper and as the sheet is removed the coro, largely because of its eccentric mounting, immediately returns to its normal position. In other words, tlie core is oscillatory Y 'To 5apply fthe frollvof paper,the core or mandrel is inserted into the -center of the roll, depressing the springs, and the pins, D, are `pushed through the .standards and into the endslof the core untill their grooves interlock with the bent ends of the springs, when v Y f the rollWill lbe supported ready .for use.

Having thus described my invention, What I ,claim -and desire to secure by Letters Patent is :f-

A roll holder having in combination ya support, .a Imandrel or core mounted for oscillating movemzent therein, said support and mandrel having holes adapted to register, means including -a Ilocking pin removably .mounted in said holes and yforming the axis about lWhich the mandrel oscillates, said pin being readily separable yendWise from said support and being -fpushed through the support from the outside after the roll of paper is gpositioned onthe mandrel, and a spring plate lon the mandrel normally proj'ecting beyond the circumference thereof and depressible When the mandrel is inserted into the open center of a ,roll of paper, said mandrel being :recessedgbetween its ends and said spring plate having a free end and said pin having a shoulder adapted to be engaged by the end oi the 'spring-to 'thereby automaticallylock the pin in place during the insertion df the latter, said spring automatically releasing the pin only When the roll of paper has-been depleted and the 'open lcenter of thesame Ahas been destroyed.

In a roll holder, the combina-tion of a support, a mandrelor corehaving endpins bearing in said support and mounted oficenter in the mandrel and provided 'With annular grooves, one of said pins beingat each end of the mandrel and the .pins being readily separable endWise vfrom said support and being pushed through the support and ends of the mandrel from the outside after the .roll of paper is positioned oncthe mandrel, anda spring plate fixed to -the mandrel and normally projecting toward -each end thereof and beyond the circumference of the mandrel, said mandrel havingnarrow transverse slots, one near each end, intersecting the bore of the pins, and said spring having bent end portions 'ldepressible into said slots and adapted to be locked linto engagement with the .grooves of the pins When vthe mandrel is inserted into lthe open center of -aaroll of paper or other fabric. y y
