IMPROVEMENT IN STARCHINGeMACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 29,932, dated July 30, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Olothesstarching Machine,
`:invented by UEIAH W. CAERELL, of Bellevillain the county of Essex and State of New Jersey.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a .front view of my improved machine. Fig.

3 is a side view of the same. Fig. 4 is a face view of one of the rubbers.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved machine for starching clothes, designed especially for laundry use, for starching the bosoms and cuffs of shirts, and'which shall `be simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation 5 and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the machine as hereinaf- .ter more fully described.
A is the base-frame of the machine, to the rear end of which is attached the lower end of a vertical frame, B. C is an inclined frame,
the lower end of which is attached to the baseframe A near its forwardfend, and the upper end of which is attached to the vertical frame B vnear its upper end. D are two arms, made slightly S-shaped, and which are halved and pivoted to each other and to the cross-barof the inclined frame C at their centers, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3, so that their outer or for` `of whichjs pivoted to a crank, g, formed upon the shaft G, which revolves in bearings attached to the framesB C, or either of them,
at their point of intersection. The cranks g project upon thefopposite sides of the shaft G, so that the bars E may always be moving in opposite directions. To one endof the shaft G is attached a crank or pulley, by
which power is applied to the machine. To
the shaft Gis attached a small gear-wheel, H, the teeth of which mesh into the teeth of a larger gear-wheel, I, which is pivoted to the side of the frame-work of the machine, and which has a pin or single tooth, J, attached to it. The tooth J, at each revolution of the wheel I, strikes against the inclined edge of the short arm of the bent lever K, which is pivoted at its angle to the frame B. To the end of the long arm of the lever K is pivoted the end of a short connectingrod, L, the other end of which is pivoted to the end of the lever M, the movement of which is Ylimited by a keeper, N, attached to the inner side of the inclined post of the frame C. The other end of the `lever M is pivoted to the inl ner side of the other inclined post of the frame C. Upon the pivoted end of the lever lM is formed a cross-head, O, to the ends of Y I which are pivoted the outer ends of the connectingrods P, the other or inner ends of which are pivoted, respectively,.to the lower vparts of the pivoted bars D, so that at each revolution of the wheel I the barsE may be moved from each. As soon as the tooth J of the wheel I has passed and released the bent lever K, the bars E are drawn back to their former position by the action of the spring Q, one end of which is connected with the lever M and its other end is attached to` the frame C, as shown in Figs. 1,2, and 3.` To the inner sides of the lower ends of the bars E are attached plates R, to the faces of which are secured rubber plates S, which are perforated, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the clothes may be turned, folded, or buckled, as
they are operated upon by the rubbers to rub the starch thoroughly into and through the clothes, and at the same time squeeze out the surplus starch.
In using the machine the bosoms and cuffs of the shirts are dipped into the starch and inserted between the rubbers, when the bars E are moved apart, and are removed and replaced with others at another outward movement of the bars and rubbers.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim 'as' new 'and desire to secure by Letters Patent-1 1. The perforated rubber plates S, in combination with the rubbing-plates R attached to the bars E, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
