Application filed December 9, 1918. Serial No. 265,975.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention,has-reference to a wind operated toy.
An object of the invention is to produce a toy, in the nature of a Whirligig comprising angularly disposed connected blades mounted on a shaft formed on the end of a handle, each of said blades being formed with vanes designed to be contacted by the wind whereby the blades are revolved around the shaft.
A further object of the invention is to produce a toy of this character in which the right angularly disposed blades are connected together without the employment of securing elements, the said blades, at the center thereof being formed with bulging portions that provide a hub for a shaft on which the blades are journaled, the blades having their outer portions slitted and the material bounded by the slits being bent at desired angles to provide vanes and are designed to be contacted by air currents to revolve the blades, the speed at which the device is revolved being regulated by the adjustment of the vanes.
It is a further object of the invention to produce a toy of this character which shall be of an extremely simple construction and which may be cheaply manufactured and marketed.
The foregoing objects may be accomplished by a construction illustrated by the drawings, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement;

Fig. 4 is a similar view of the cooperating blade.
Preferably, and as disclosed by the drawings, a handle for the toy is constructed of wire and is indicated by the numeral 1. The handle may be twisted as disclosed by the drawings and the strands comprising the same formed in the shape of a flat sub- .sta tially rectangular 1909 or dene portion at the lower end'of the handle to afford a more eflicient grip thereon. The handlel, at 1ts opposite end is extended at a right angle to provide a shaft 2 and on this shaft 1s journaled the wind wheel which is broadly designated by the numeral 3. The shaft, at the portion thereof on which the wind wheel 1s jcurnaled may be reduced or may be provided with flanges 4 which may be in the nature of washer members so that the wind wheel is held against movement in a longitudinal direction on the shaft.
The wind wheel comprises two blades of similar size and each constructed of a flat rectangular plate or sheet of any suitable material, thin metal, such as tin preferred, but, of course, the blades may be constructed of card board or other material as desired.
The blades, for distinction are indicated by the numerals 5 and 6 respectively. Each of the blades, at the center thereof is formed with an out-bulged portion 7 having a central opening therethrough, and these portions 7 provide what may be termed the hub of the wind wheel, the shaft 2 of course, being received through the hub. The blade 5, at the center thereof is provided with spaced longitudinal slits 8 of a length corresponding with the width of the blade 6, and the blade 6 is adapted to be passed through these slits whereby to connect the same to the blade 5 and arrange both of the blades at a right angle with respect to each other. When the blades are thus associated a pointed implement is forced therethrough, at preferably diagonally opposed points, thus forcing the material of one of the blades into frictional contact with the material of the other blade and thus locking the blades together.
Both of the blades 5 and 6, outward of their lapping or connected central portions are provided with spaced longitudinal and transverse slits, and the metal bounded by the said slits is bent at an inward angle, or at an angle in the direction of the handle 1 to provide vanes 9. The blades being constructed of bendable material, preferably, as stated, of tin, permit of the vanes being arranged at desired angles with respect thereto, so that the same may be adjusted to ofler the proper resistance to air currents to permit of the wheel being revolved by such conta t it? a desired velocity.
