To all whom t may concern:
` Be it known that 1HYMAN ROTNAGLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pressing Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification. y
This invention relates more particularly to a class of apparatus Iadapted to be used for pressing clothes.
My invention has for its object primarily toprovide an apparatus adapted to be utilized in a manner whereby clothes and other articles made of fabrics may be readily and properly pressed, and which is of a simple, eiiicient and durable form so that garments when made-up may be conveniently steamed and pressed as well as being designed for pressing seams and other parts of a garment and the like during the making thereof With these and other objects in view, the
f invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts'in all the views, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

The pressing apparatus has a presser head or a hollow body 2 5 which is preferably par= tially elliptic in shape to provide two converging side walls 27, 28, and a straight rear wall 30. On the lower edges of the walls of vthe body 25 is a rectilinear base-plate 3l,
and on the upper edges of the walls of the body is a top-plate 32,s The interior of the body is divided into a water chamber 33 for generating steam and a. fire box, or heating chamber 34 by a partition 35 disposed longitudinally between the walls of the body 'so as to be spaced above the base-plate 31.,v
Under the base-plate 31 may be an auxiliary steam chamber 36 which is provided by se curing with-bolts, or otherwise to the hollow body a bottom-plate 37 which is spaced below the base-plate, and in this bottom-plate are anumber of perforations, or slots 38 39a for controlling the flow of gas therethrough, and this burner passes through an opening, as 4l, in the rear wall 30 of the body of the presser head so asv to be connected to a exible pipe leading from a source of gas, or other fuel supply. The smoke and products of combustion with which the ireebox 34 may be charged when the burner 'is lighted are cleared from the fire-'box by providing a chimney, or flue, as 42, in the form of a tube leading from an opening in the forward part of the partition 35 to an opening in the forward part of the top-plate 32 of the body 25, and 1n the central part of the body adjacent to the side wall 28 may be a second chimney,or due 43 also in the form of a tube leading from another opening in the partition 35 to a second opening in the top-plate 32, the provision of the two chimneys serving to cause air to circulate through the fire-box for causing a thorough exhaust of the smoke during the combustion of the gas at the burner 39. fn the rear part of the partition 35 is an inlet 44 for the admission of water into the chamber 33 through a exible pipe 45 with a cutoff valve 45a interposed therein, this pipe leading to the fire-box 34 and through an opening in the side wall 28 of the body 25 from a suitable source of water-supply, or

from a, tank 45a arranged on the transverse bar 22 of the frame l0, and interposed in this inlet pipe may be a pump, as 46, of any well-known, or preferred type adapted to be used for forcing a suitable supply of water at intervals to the chamber 33. 0n the rear wall 30 of the hollow body 25 is a device, or water age 47 which may be of any commonly own, or preferred form adapted to indicate the quantity of water in the chamm ber 33, the usual glass -tube 48 of this water gage communicating with the chamber through a curved pipe, or elbow 49 havmg one end fastened to the lower end of the glass tube, while the other end of the elbow is secured in an opening or outlet 50 in the i rear wall of the body so as to lead into the lower part of the chamber 33. The upper end of the tube 48 is connected to a pipe 51 leading -to an opening, or outlet 52 in the top-plate 32 of the body of the presser head to provide communicatlon between this pipe and the chamber for passage of steam, and interposed in this pipe is a steam gage 53 which may be of any suitable make. By providing the water gage 47 and the steam gage 53 in this manner the quantity of water supplied to the chamber 33 will be indicated inthe glass tube 48 by the water flowing from the chamber through the outlet 50 and through the elbow 49 to a level in the tube corresponding to the level of the water in the chamber, and the steam when generated in the chamber 33 will pass through the outlet 52 into the pipe 51 and into the gage 53 which in turn will be loperated by the pressure of the steam for indicating on its dial in the usual fashion the steam pressure in this chamner. In order that steam from the chamber 33 may be'delivered to the auxiliary steam chamber 36, a delivery pipe 54 is arranged above the top-plate 32 of the body 25 so as to lead from anopening 55 in the rear part of the top-plate to an opening 56 in the central part of the top-plate, these openings being preferably provided in spaced relation to the'chimney 43 so that the chimney and the openings are in triangular arrangement. Interiorly of the chamber 33 is a tube 57 leading from the openin 56 to an opening 58 in the central part of t e partition 35, and the lower end of the tube 57 may be interiorly threaded in which is `screwed a second tube 59 leadin to an opening 60 in the central part of t e base-plate 31. Communication is thereby provided between the chambers 33 and 36, and in the lower end of the second tube may be a plu 61 with an opening in which is held a smal tube 62 of a length to extend preferably from the opening in the base-plate to the central part of the tube 57 while in the delivery pipe 54 is interposed a valve 63 for regulating the flow of steam from the chamber 33 to the tube 57 and through the small tube 62 for delivery into the auxlliary chamber 36 so as to be distributed through the perforations 38 of the bottom-plate 37. When it is 'desired to dispense with generating steam in the chamber 33, steam may be supplied to the presser head from a suitable source of supply by providing in one end of the delivery pipe 54 a threaded opening which is` normally closed by a. plu 63Il screwed in the opening, but instead o this plug a pipe, or tube leading from the source of steam supply may be fastened to the delivery pipe, in which instance, the steam will iiow throu h the delive pipe into they tube 57, throug the small tu e 62, and into th,e' auxiliary chamber 36 for distribution ,ment of through the perforations 38 of', the bottomplate 37, and in event 'of the chamber 33 being charged with an excess of steam pressure the pressure may be lessened by escape.
t 1e steam through a safety valve, as 64, provided on the top-plate of the body 25 at an opening, or outlet in this plate, the safety valve bein of any well-known, or preferred type.l bpaced slightly above the top-plate of the body of the presser-head is a triangularly shaped bracket, or strap, as 66, two corners of which are fastened to the topat the openings 55 and 56 under the ends of the delivery pipe 54, and this bracket is of a size so that its third corner terminates centrally of the top-plate ofthe body of the presser head. Also extendin from the third corner of the bracket 66 1s an arm 67 having its free end fastened to the top-plate of the body of the presser head at the chimney'43, and at the juncture of this arm with the thirdwcorner of the bracket isa ring 68, while projecting laterally from the bracket to some distance beyond the side wall 27 of the body is a handle, as 69, to permit the presser head to be manually moved when used for pressing articles.
When it is required to steam and shape certain parts of a garment, for example, the sleeves, I may provide an adjustable heating element, as 107. This adjustable element may consist of a hollow body 108 of a pipelike form to provide a steam chamber therein, and through the upper art of the wall of the body are spaced ori ces 109 for distributing steam from the chambered body 108. One end of this chambered body is open, and this open end is fastened in the t ment 107 is thereby adapted to be swung in various directions longitudinally above the presser head, and when the valve 111 is open steam may be delivered from the chamber 33 of the presser head through the pipe 112, throu h the valve 111, and into'the chami bered ody 108 for distribution through the orifices 109. In practice the sleeve or other part of a, garment is arranged on the body 108 lwhen the steam is being distributed through its orifices, andy guiding the part of the garment over the ody for contact by the steam it will be properly shaped and steamed according to requirements. Thus a, simple, eiiicient and durable pressing apparatus is provided whereby arments when made-up may beconvenient y steamed and pressed as well as being designed for pressing seams and other parts of the garment and the like during the making thereof.
In the foregoing description, have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of, this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a pressing apparatus, a pressure head with a hollow body partitioned to provide a water chamber for generating steam as well as providing a heating chamber under the water chamber, an auxiliary chamber under the heating chamber for receiving steam from the water chamber and the auxiliary chamber having a series of outlets for the distribution of the steam, a pipe leading from a source of water supply to the water chamber, a valve-controlled pipe leading from the water chamber to the auxiliary chamber for conveying steam, aheater in the heating chamber, and a valve-controlled perforated pipe adjustably arranged on the water chamber so as to protrude from the body of the pressure head.
