VICTOR V. DIBOVSKY, OF KINGSWAY, LONDON, ENGLAND.
MACHINE-GUN.
Application filed April 10, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR VLADIMIRO- vrror-r Dmovsxr, a Russian subject, captain of the Russian naval general stafi, and whose post-office address is Canada House, Kingsway, London England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine- Guns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machine-guns.
The rate of fire of an automatic gun can be increased by increasing the rate of reciprocation of the breech-block and other parts cooperating therewith. If the said rate of reciprocation is increased, disadvantages arise because the liability of the mechanism to jam is increased. It is to a device in the extractor-mechanism of a highspeed machine-gun, to counteract this disadvantage, that the present invention relates.
In a gun provided with an extractor moving with the lock-casing and upheld by guides during the first portion of the rearward movement of the lock, and having to pass clear from those guides and descend across the face of the lock-casing during an interval in which the, lock completes its rearward movement and commences its return movement, there is a possibility, when the gun is firing rapidly, that if the descent of the extractor be left to the action of gravity alone it will not descend-fast enough to prevent it from being caught against. the guide-ends in the return movement of the lock. Accordingly the present inventor having found the extractor-controlling devices in existing weapons ineflicient has devised an improved device as follows :He provides a spring always in compression (or tension) resting at one end against a portion of the lock or its casing and at the other end against a projection from the ex tractor in order to accelerate the descent of the extractor. By this means the rate of descent of the extractor with the cartridge carried by it is increased, and the extractor will be no longer liable to be caught by the returning lock and jammed against the guide-ends; moreover the spring will cushion or buffer the extractor on the upstroke of the latter.
This invention therefore comprises, in a gun provided with an extractor moving with the lock-casing and upheld by guides from which it passes clear when it is neces- Specification of Letters Patent.

sary that it should descend toward the cartridge-belt, the combination with that extractor of a spring that is always in compression or tension), is carried on the lockcasmg and is adapted to accelerate the descent of the extractor and to cushion the upstroke of the extractor. In a preferred construction according to this invention, the extractor is formed or fitted with a projection passing through a slot in the front wall of the lock-casing and downwardly acted on by a spring in compression, situated inside the lock-casing.
The invention is hereinafter described in its application to a Vickers gun of a type already wellknown and firing small-arm ammunition.
The accompanying drawing is an elevation, partly in section, of the rear end of the casing of a gun showing one construction of the improved guiding device by which the descent of the extractor during its rear ward motion with the lock is insured.
Referring to the drawing, EX is an extractor arranged to slide vertically up and down on the forward face of the lock-casing LG, and G is one of two stationary guides or cams attached to the cheek-plates of the gun-casing at each side of the lock. Projections can extend from each side of the extractor and ride upon the top of the guides G during the rearward movement of the lock-casing until they pass the rear end of the guide G. In order to insure that the extractor shall descend smartly when it is clear of the guide G, a projection EX is provided on the rear side of the extractor extending through a slot SL in the lock and having a pin EP upon it around which is coiled the lower end of a helical spring ES always in compression between the projection EX and a portion of the interior of the lock-casing above it. The spring ES when the extractor rises, will buffer it so as to reduce the violence of the shock with which the upstroke of the extractor will be checked.
Though the spring ES is shown and described as a helical spring in compression, other forms of spring might be used instead. For instance a helical spring in tension might be placed under the projection EX- and arranged to pull it downward, or other suitable forms might be used instead of helical springs, this invention comprising the employment of a spring carried by and traveling with the lock-casing LC, always ready to act for the purpose of promptly carrying down the extractor EX during the recoil movement thereof as soon as it has cleared the rear ends of the guides G, and of checking the extractor during the upward movement thereof. 7 i What I claim as my invention and desire j to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a machinegun, the combination wlth a lock casing, an extractor carried thereby, and .means for guiding said ex- 1 tractor in. the direction of the length of the Ccpiesof this patent may be obtained for gum said extractor being movable relative to the casing when disengaged from the guiding means, of a spring carrie'diby the 'lock casing and cooperating with the extractor to accelerate movement thereof relagun, the extractor being movable transversely of the gun when disengaged from the guiding means, of a spring cooperating with the extractor to accelerate movement thereof relative to the casing in one d1rection and decelerate its movement in the opposite direction. 3. In a machine gun, the combination with a lock casing adapted to reciprocate in the direction of the length of the gun, 7 an extractor mounted on the front of said casing and means for guiding the extractor during reciprocations' of the casing, the extractor being movable transversely of the gun when it is disengaged from said guiding 'means, of a spring arranged within the casing and adapted to accelerate .such transverse movement of the extractor.
4L. Ina machine gun, the combination with a lock casing adapted to reciprocate in the direction of the length of the gun, an
extractor carriedby-the casing,.and means for guiding the extractor during such reciprocation of the" casing, the extractor being movable transversely 0f the gun when disengaged irorn said guiding means, of a projection on theextractor extending through a' slot in the casing, and a spring arranged within thecasing and cooperating with said projection on the extractor to accelerate transverse movement thereof.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature.
