JOHN A. BEACH, or mUsxE'eoN, MIcHIGAN.
" LAY-OUT Toor..
` Specication of Letters Patent.
Application led November 4, 1918. Serial No. 260,923.
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, JOHN A. Blanca, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Muskegon, county of Muskegom State of Michigan, have invented useful Improvements in Lay-Out Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n layout tools. p .n c
The main objects of this invention are? First, to provide an improved combination layout easily and uickly adapted or ad]ust.ed and manipulate for the laying out of ldleren't kinds of work, such as flat and round work.
| Second, to provide an improved punch head for lay out work and center punch work adapted for use with combination sets such as scale and square heads or scale and center heads.
'Further objects, and objects relatlng to structural details, will denitely4 appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specication. The invention is clearly dened and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearl illustrated in the accompanying drawing, orming -a part of this specification, in whlch:
Figure I is a detail side view of my improved lay out tool showing one manner of" using the same. 1
Fig. II is a detailv vertical section on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. III,
through the punch head, thescale and punchbeing shown in full lines. l
Fig. III is a transverse section on a line corresponding to line'3-3 of Figs. I and II.
Fig. IV is a detail view of my improved layout tool adapted as a center punch, a shaft being indicated by dotted lines.
Fig. V is an end view of the punch head mounted upon a scale asin the adaptation v shown in Fig. IV. i Fig. VI is a detail side elevation looln'ng from thel left of Fig. V.
In the drawing simil-ar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the certain `new and 4 tool and center punch which is.
work, the scale, and 3 a square head adjustably mounted upon the` scale, the scalel being provided with a longitudinal groove 4 and the square head with a clamp-ing means 5 by which the square head is adj ustably and removably secured to the scale. These parts are of well known -construction and therefore are not illustrated with further detail.
I provide a punch head 6 having a vertical bore 7 ,for the punch 8, the head being slotted at 9 to receive the pin 10 which retainsthe punch. The coiled spring 11 normally retracts the punch.
The punch head 6 is rovided with a vertical slot-likescale soc et 12. The center plane of the socket is in an axialplane or a central plane through the punch, the inner end of the 4socket being at the periphery of the punch. In the structure illustrated the radius of the punch is equal to one or more units ofthe scale-one eighth of an inch,v
lPatented Apr. 1, 1919.-
inciding, as do also the longitudinal edge of the seat and the center plane of the socket.
When used as a center punch the center head 14 is mounted upon the scale, the heads 3 and 14 being interchangeable and adjustable. The scale is retained in the socket by means of the opposed set screws 15, while it 'is retained in the seat 13 by means of the clamp 16, which is removablyv arranged in the hole 17 transversely through' the head, the clamp being provided with a clamping nut 18. When this nut is removed the clamp can be withdrawn or inserted.
My improved layout tool enables the accurate and rapid laying out of flat or round work. I have showny the Scale and the squareV and center heads mainly in conventional form and my improvements may be readily adapted to various so-called combination sets which are now in use.
I. have illustrated and described my improvements in an adaptation which I find very practical and satisfactory. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention. relates to embody or adapt thesame as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: l
1. The combination with a scale and square and center headsl adapted to be interchangeably and adjustably associated with said scale, of a punch vhead provided with a punch and having a vertical scale socket and 4a vhorizontal rectangular scale seat having a longtiudinal edge2 the center plane ofthe socket and the longitudinal edge of the seat being in the same plane andradial to said punch, a removable clamp for securing said scale in said seat, and ,clamping screws for securing said scale in said socket.
v2. The combination with a scale, of a punch head provided with a punch and having a vertical scale socket and a horizontal rectangular scale seat having a longitudinal edge, the center plane of the socket and the longltudinal edge of the seat being inthe same plane and radial to said punch, a 'removable clamp for securing sald scale 1n said seat, and clampmg screws for-securing 4said scale in said socket.
3. 'The' combination with a scalefof a punch head provided with a punch and hav- 'ing a vertical scale socket and a horizontal rect'angplar scale seat havinga longitudinal e'center plane of the socket and the longitudinal edge of the seat being in the -same' plane 'and radial to saidv punch, the innerend of' the socket and the angle ofA said seat being at the peri hery of the punch, the radius of the punc being equal .y to a unit of the scale, a removable clamp for securing said scale in said seat, and clamplng screws for securing said scale in said socket'.
4. The combination with a scale and a square head adjustably associated withsaid scale, of a punch head provided with a punch and having a vertlcal scalev socket,
.the center plane of the socket bein radial to said punch, and means for securmg said scalein'said socket.
5. Thel combination with' a scale, of a punch head provided with a punch and having a verticaFscale socket, the center plane ofthe 'socket being radial to said punch,
`and 'means for securing said scale in said socket .with 4the longitudinal edge of the scale at right angles to the axis of the punch... r
6. The combination with a scale, of a punch head provided with a punch and having a vertical scale socket, the center plane of the socket being radial to said punch, the inner end of the socket being at the periphof the scale, and a means for securing said scale in said seat. l
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of tw Witnesses.l
