Description

J.`H. TRAVIS.
Improve-ment in Extension-Chairs.
UNITED STATES `JOSEPH H. TRAVIS, OF GHARLESTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSIQN CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,873, dated July 23, 1872. i
To all to whom these presents shall come:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH H. TRAVIS, of
Charlestown, in the county of Middlesex and tobe used, can be readily drawn out from the chair-frame, automatically assuming an inclined position from the chair-seat outward, and coming to a rm support at its front edge l upon a leg, or legs securedthereto.
In the accompanying plate of drawing my invention is illustrated, Figure l being a plan view of a chair-frame with my improved legrest applied, and shown byV dotted lines as inl its outermost position; Fig. 2, a vertical section in plane of line w, Fig. l, with the footrest drawn out.
A in the drawing represents the base of chair-seat; B, the supporting-legs; and (l, the back-frame, constructed in themselves, with `the seat and back frames lupholstered in any of the usual modes and styles; D, a frame, which, under the present invention, is the foot and leg rest of the chair A. This frame D is constructed of parallel side bars a a, at one end, b, joined by a cross-bar, c, and at their other end d, both pivoted to one end of extension bars f, hung at their other end g to and upon acoxnmon rod, h; l, a leg at center of bar c.
The rest-frame D, made as above described,
is arranged within the seat-frame A, as shown that is, with its rod h extended across from one to the other of the side frames E of the chair-seat, passing through slots min the horizontal bar n of each side frame E, and then each outer end of the rod h headed, bringing the remaining portions of the rest-frame D toward the front side of the chair, extending, by its parallel sidebars a a, under the front rail or bar H of the chair-base.
With the slots m of proper length, it is obvious the rest-frame D can be brought wholly Within the base of the chair.
If the frame D be drawn out, obviously it will assume the inclined position shown in Fig. 2, the front edge of it being rigidly and iirmly supported by the leg l, so that, withthe frame D upholstered in any suitable manner, it is obvious a most perfect and easy rest for a persons legs will be secured.
The rod h may be dispensed with, and sim-4 ply bolts at each bar u employed, but it is best to use wa rod, as the movement of the frame in and out is rendered stiiler and firmer. Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- .l
The rest-frame D, made of side bars a. having extension bars f andcross-bar o having leg l, with the bars a and f adapted to move through slots or guides m of chair-frame, the
Whole constructed substantially as shown, for
the purpose described.
- J. H. TRAVIS.
