BENJAMIN F. HILDEBRAND, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
STERILIZER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1919.
Application filed September 13, 1918. Serial No. 254,860.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. HILDE- BRAND, a citizen of the United States, and residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sterilizers, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention relates to improvements in sterilizers and consists in the particular construction and arrangements of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
The primary object of the prevent invention is to provide an improved, compact and efiicient sterilizer.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved and simplified construction whereby a cheap and durable article may be produced.
I accomplish these several objects by means of the construction disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and drawings, and in which I Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sterilizer;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view Fig. 3 is a partly broken view in longitudinal section; and
Fig. 4 is a detailed elevation of the separator and support for the heating unit.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to indicate the outer one of a pair of nested cylinders and 2 the inner cylinder. The cylinders 1 and 2 are connected at their upper portions of their peripheries by means of a well 3 having apertured side walls to permit the passage of expanded air from between said cylinders 1 and 2.
The well opening .3 is provided between the cylinders 1 and 2 in order to provide an opening into the inner cylinder 2 through which articles to be sterilized may be passed into said inner cylinder 2.
A cover 4 is hingedly mounted above the well opening 3 as at 5, said cover being provided. with what I term a condensing plate 6 having depending flanges 7 on all sides thereof which depend into the well opening 3 when the cover 4 is closed whereby condensed moisture may be drained back into the inner cylinder 2.
The cylinders 1 and 2 are retained in spaced relation by means of insulating antially filled with water and the articles to be sterilized are placed within said cylinder 2 and the water thereln.
A current is passed through the conductors 10 to heat the same and said heat, by lltldlatlOll, heats the water within the cyliner 2.
It is obvious that the air between the cylinders l and 2 will expand as the temperature of the said air increases. This expansion of air is partially dissipated through the apertures in the side walls of the well opening 3 and passing into the interior of the said cylinder 2 assists in heating the water therein. As the current is discontinued through the conductors 10 the air is cooled and gradually contracts through said apertures thereby preventing an excessive pressure within the space between the cylinders 1 and 2.
The well opening and hinged cover 4 are normally retained uppermost by means of lateral supports or extensions 14 mounted on the periphery of the outer cylinder 1 and opposite the well opening 3 between said cylinders.
I am aware that the present state of the art discloses heaters comprising nested containers with a heating unit interposed. I therefore do not claim such a combination broadly as my invention. but
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A sterilizer comprising a pair of nested cylinders; a well connecting the cylinders to provide an opening to the inner cylinder; a heating unit interposed between the cylinders; and means for supporting the cylinders in spaced relation and the heating unit between said cylinders.
2. A sterilizer comprising a pair of nested cylinders; a well connecting the cylinders to provide an opening to the inner cylinder; a heating unit interposed between the cylinders; means for supporting the cylinders in spaced relation and the heating unit between said cylinders; and lateral extensions secured at each end of the outer cylinder and oppositethe Well to retain said well up permost.
3. A sterilizer comprising a pair of nested cylinders; avvell connecting the cylinders at the top portions thereof to provide an opening into the cylinder; a suitable cover hingedlymounted above the Well; a condensing plate secured to the under side of the cders in spaced relation; and a heating unit mounted between said annular insulators.
4; Asterlllzer comprisinga pair of nested cylinders; a Well connecting thecylinders at the top portions thereof to provide an'open ing into theinner cylinder; a suitable cover hingedly mounted above the Well; a condens ing plate secured to the under side of the cover and having depending flanges to drain condensed moisture into said Wellyaiinular insulators mounted between the ends of the cylinders to retain and support said cylinders in spaced relation; a heating unit mounted between said vannular insulators;
and lateral extensions mounted upon each end "of the outer cylinder and opposite the ell to retain; said Well uppermost.
5'. A sterilizer comprising apair of nested cylinders; a Well connecting the" cylinders between portions of their peripheries, said Well having apertured Walls to permit the passage of-air ,tothe space-between the said cylinders; a suitable cover hingedly mounted above the Well; a condensing plate secured to the under side of the cover and having flanges depending into the Well togconvey condensed moisture from said plate into the inner cylinder; apertured annular insulators mounted between the ends of the cylinders to retain the same in spaced relation; and a heating unit I mounted Within the apertures of said insulators.
