Description

s. c. PRESCOTT.
lmprqvement inPavements.
Patented luly23,1 872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SHUBEAL C. PRESCOTT, 0E JERSEY CITY, NEw JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 HOW- ARD SMITH, on NEW YORK CITY.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAVEMENTS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHUBEAL O. PRESCOTT, of Jersey City, in the State of New Jersey,
7 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Making and Constructing Street- Pavements made of Stone in combination with Concrete; and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part thereof, and in which-- Figure 1 i represents a plan view of my im-' provement. 1
Having stated the nature and object of my invention, I proceed to describe the construction of the road orstreet bed, and the manner in which the pavement is laid or constructed upon the road or street bed so constructed by the combination of the blocks of stone and concrete, and the manner of constructing the w hole, thereby forming a pavement of the most permanent and durable nature.
The surface of the roador street bed is graded in the usual form, and the blocks of stone are laid at right or any other desirable angle with the curb of the street, resting upon the surface of the bed of the street, leaving any desirable space between the several series of blocks. When so laid awedge is driven down between the several series of blocks so laid, as aforesaid, at any desirable distance below the surface of the road-bed. These spaces so formed between the several courses or series of blocks are then filled with concrete, and driven down into the space so made by the manner of laying the blocks of stone and driving the wedge between them down into the earth below the surface of the street, the concrete so forced down into the aforesaid spaces filling the space below the Surface of the roadbed and forming a shoulder, upon ,each side of which each block of stone will in part rest, thereby forming a combination between the road-bed, concrete, and blocks of stone at once firm and durable, each block retaining its position, and not liable to be forced down by pressure from an even surface.
I do not claim that the laying of a pavement of stone and concrete is new; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pavement composed of blocks separated by concrete, the concrete being driven below the surface of the road-bed for the double purpose of forming stops to prevent the flow or water, and shoulders for the support of the blocks, as described.
