Description
UNITED STATES HEMAN A. LAGEY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAVEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,073, dated December 17,1872.
To. all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEMAN A. LACEY, of
Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pavements; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to'the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
In the drawing, Figure l is a view, in plan, of the pavement, in which-A are blocks of wood or stone; B is a layer of sand or gravel; O is a plank flooring, with spaces 0 between the planks; D is the sub-foundation of sand or gravel, resting on a properly-graded roadbed, E; Fig. 2 is a section through Fig. 1, in which a are interstices between the blocks A, filled in with sand, gravel, or other suitable material; and Fig. 3 is a View of gutter, in section.
My invention consists in the pavement of wood or stone when constructed as follows:
1 first grade the road-bed E to the required shape and pitch, and upon this bed I place a layer of sand, gravel, or other suitable material, D, of the desired thickness or depth to form a solid foundation. Upon this layer of sand or gravelI put a flooring of plank, O,
leaving spaces 0 between each plank and the adjacent one. Upon this flooring, and between the planks D, I place another layer of sand, gravel, or other suitable material, B, of sufficient thickness to prevent the blocks A from coming into contact with the planks (l.
I then place upon this layer B the blocks A,
which may be of wood or stone, of any of the patterns used in paving, leaving interstices between them, as far as practicable, to be.
filled with sand, gravel, or other suitable material- The object of my invention being to dis pense throughout the structure with the contact of wood against wood, and thereby to do away with the greatest cause of decay in pavements.
I do not, therefore, limit myself to the materials employed, which may be of any nature ordinarily used in constructing pavements.
I propose sometimes to make the gutters of stone, detached entirely from the pavement, as shown in Fig. 3. The object of this is to admit of sewerage being laid, or gas and water service being put down or repaired, without injuring or disturbing in any manner the pavement.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of road-bed E, layer D, plank flooring O with spaces 0, layerB, and separated paving-blocks A filled in at a, for the purpose of avoiding the contact of wood against wood, all constructed and arranged substantially as set forth and described.
2. A wood pavement provided at the sides with detached stone gutters, for the purposes substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
HEMAN A. LAGEY.
