, M l CHARLES I. LATTIG, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
TO LANGSLOW-FOWLER COMPANY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK. A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
Ap'piicatiorifaied April 14. 1913.
Be it known that l. CHARLES I. LATTIG, a citizen of the United States` residing at Rochester, in the -county of Monroe and State of New York, lhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in School- Chairs; and I do hereby .declare the following to be a full, clear,.and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My present invention hasfor its object to provide an improved form of combined chair and writing desk, which is partlcularly adapted to be used as a study or School chair, the parts of which areadjustable to accommodate persons of different stature.
My invention has .for its further object to provide an improved-framing construction adapted particularly for chairs of this charactor, consisting in the positioning of Aone of the front legs of the chair ahead of the forward edge of the seat for the purposegof increasing the stability of the chair and rendering it less liable to be overturned.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings:
Figure l' is aside elevation of a chair constructed in accordance ,with my invention 2 is a front elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is atop plan View` the desk lid being' removed, and shown in plan View in Fig. 4;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail, vertical, scctional viw taken on the line .mh-5X of Fig.'
l, and
Fig. 6 is a similar view taken on the line 6 `6x of Fig. 5.
Similar reference numerals in the several gures, indicate the same parts.
In carrying out my invention it may be. applied to any particular type or style of chair, the essential elements of Which are shown in the illustrations as comprisethe seat l and the front and rear pairs of legs a:a,1 b-b respectively. The rear legs are connected by the rail 'or frame piece b2 and they are each connected with one of the l Specicaton of Letters Patent'.

pieces c -fo which are of unequal length, the longerone being preferably located at the right hand side of the structure sov as to position the leg a somewhat in advance shown particularly in Fig. l, thus ln'ov'iding a forwardly projecting bearing or support in advance of'the forward edge of the seat l. The usual front frame piece of the chair Seat frame, indicated by extends beneath the forward edge of the seat parallel to the rail L2, its ends being mortised or otherwise secured to theinner face of the rail 0 and the inner edge of the yleg a. lThe seat l is preferably made solid wood and at one edge is provided with the forwardly extending projection l", which overlaps the inner edge of the leg a and to which it is securely united` this arrangement affording a brace or bracket,vwhich materiallystitfens the upper end of said leg. The latter may also be further braced by a bracket (Z secured to the face of the rail (l near its lower edge as shown in Fig. 2.
The desk or writing table yindicated by chair seat and the end of the tically a short to afford a chair leg a 1s projected 'verdistanceas indicated by a2 and also spaced therefrom and parallel to the leg 1s a frame piece a which is secured to the outer face of the rail c. its upper end being united to the upper extremity of the leg a by a cross plate a". The leg (1 and the frame m3 are. preferably made rectangular in cross section so that their Side faces', and front and rear edges combine to form parallel angular guides on which is movably mounted the vertically adjustable support on which the desk is mounted.
The support for the desk comprises the vertical angle iron strips f-f joined at their lower ends by the strap f2, having their upper ends f3 and f4, respectively, bent into a horizontal position and extendin transversely across the front of the chair. The portions f-f of the support are connected at their upper ends by an angle iron guide g and their laterally projecting ends fa-f* are similarly connected by a guide g', said guides being arranged parallel and extending forwardly relatively` to the cha-ir seat.
he support is further strengthened by a plate h riveted to the -parts f8 and f4 and and constructed of.
corner bracket plates -i extending over the outer faces of the angle irons and riveted thereto, as shown inthe several figures. The desk 2 is adjustably secured in position by rails k and k', which permit it to be adjusted either forwardly or rearwardly, 'as desired, the limitation of this movement being determined by a stop member Z attached to the under side of the desk and coperating with the' adjacent edges of the supporting members f3 and ff, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. et, and full lines in Fig. 6.
The vertical adjustment of the desk is preferably obtained by clamping nuts on the bolts ln-m carried on lthe leg. ay and guidel piece a3, which project through elongated slots or apertures in the supporting members f--f, shown particularly in Fig. l.
i A chair constructed Ain accordance with my present invention possesses va particular advantage in that a iirm and rigid construetion is provided for the support of the desk which is disposed centrallyof one end thereof and as the support itself comprises parallel members Which are spaced apart, it .is capable of withstanding thetivisting or torsional strains resulting from shifting the chair by grasping the desk, by carelessness on the part of the user when seating himself or in attemptingto arise from the chair; or by reason of the load which may be applied to the desk; further, an important function may be ascribed to the positioning of the leg underlying the desk lid at a point' in advance of the other front leg of the chair, since this separates the bearing points on Which the chair rests and affords additional stability to the structure without requiring greater iioor space than must be allotted to an ordinary chair equipped with a desk. attachment.
I claim as my invention:
l -A freely movable school ohair comprising a seat, two hind legs aud a leg at a forward portion of the seat, a desk and a supporting frame therefor, said frame. eomprisving a horizontal part extending iu front of and above the seat and a vertical part at one end only, the vertical part being secured `to the chair, the desk being entirely supported on said supporting clearance on one side for ingress and egress, said chair having a base support immovable relatively to the chair and located in front of the seat, and which extends approximately to the front edge of the supporting frame preventing easy forward tipping of the desk and chair.
frame. thus providinga 2. A freely movable school chair eomprising a seat, tivo hind legs and a leg at a forward portion of the scat, a desk and a wide supporting framel extending Jfrom the chair to approximately the front of theV desk, said frame con'iprising ay horizontal and a vertical part of substantially the same width, the horizontal part extendingin front of and 4above the scat and the vertical part at one end only, the vert-ical part being secured to the chair, the desk being entirely supported on said supporting frame, thus providing a clearance on one side for ingress and egress.
base support approxi!u said chair having a as the saldvframc lomately the same width cated-in front of the seat and extending` approxin'iately to the front edge of the supporting frame preventing easy forward tipping of the desk and chair.
