L. COATALEN & H. C. M. STEVENS. GEARING FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES.

UNITED STATES PATENT onmon.
LOUIS COATALEN AND HERBERT CHARLES MACLEOD STEVENS, OF WOLVERHAMPTON, ENGLAND.
GEARING FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Application filed April 9, 1.918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, LoUIs COATALEN and HERBERT CHARLES MACLEOD S'rnvnns, residing at Moorfield W'orks, lVolverhampton, in the county of Stafford, England, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Gearing for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to internal combustion engines of the type in which the cylinders are arranged in pairs and the cylinders of each pair are relatively inclined, such engines being commonly designated V-engines. When the cam shafts are arranged over the cylinders or in any other position with their axes parallel to the crank-shaft, the cam shafts are ordinarily .driven from the crankshaft through counter-shafts when trains of wheels are not used. The object of this invention is to overcome the difficulty which has hitherto been experienced in obtaining a satisfactory drive of the counter-shafts, particularly when the angle between the cylinders or the countershafts is in the neighborhood of 60 or less.
The invention comprises the transmission of the required motion through a system of bevel or other wheels in which a single wheel on the crank-shaft drives a wheel on an intermediate shaft and motion is taken from the latter through other wheels to the counter-shafts or a. single wheel on the crankshaft drives a wheel on one of the countershafts and another wheel on the latter drives a wheel on the second counter-shaft through a wheel on the intermediate shaft. The invention also comprises the utilization of the shaft of the intermediate wheel for driving the magneto and other accessories.
Referring to the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings Figure 1 is a side view and Fig. 2 an end view showing diagrammatically one manner of carrying the invention into effect.
In carrying the invention into effect as shown, a pair of relatively inclined countershafts a are used. A bevel wheel 7) on each shaft gears with a bevel wheel 0 on an intermediate shaft d. The said wheel 0 gears Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1919.
Serial No. 227,518.
with another bevel wheel 6 on the crank shaft. The axes of the counter-shafts lie in the same vertical plane, but preferably the axis of the intermediate shaft d is inclined thereto. From the intermediate shaft motion can be taken through wheels 7, g and h to the magneto spindle, air starting distributer or other accessories. A bevel wheel '11 for driving 6. g., an oil pump may be arranged to gear directly with the crank-shaft wheel e.
By the above described mechanism the disadvantage of excessive speed in the countershafts which is inevitable with the gear ra tios permissible when both counter-shafts are driven directly from a common bevel wheel on the crank-shaft is avoided.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In internal combustion engines of the type in which the cylinders are arranged in pairs, the cylinders of each pair being relatively incline-d, the combination comprising a bevel wheel on the crank-shaft, a pairof relatively inclined counter-shafts, an intermediate shaft, a bevel wheel on the intermediate shaft gearing with the bevel wheel on the crankshaft, and a bevel wheel on each of the counter-shafts gearing with the bevel wheel on the intermediate shaft, substantially as described.
2. In internal combustion engines of the type in which the cylinders are arranged in pairs, the cylinders of each pair being relatively inclined, the combination comprising a bevel wheel on the crank-shaft, a pair of relatively inclined counter-shafts, an intermediate shaft, a bevel wheel on the intermediate shaft gearing with the bevel wheel on the crank-shaft, a bevel wheel on each of the counter-shafts gearing with the bevel wheel on the intermediate shaft, a second bevel wheel on the intermediate shaft, transverse shafts, and bevel wheels on the same gearing with the second bevel wheel on the intermediate shaft, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification.
LOUIS COA'IALEN. HERBERT CHARLES MACLEOD STEVENS.
