Description

J. R. HATHWAY. Oil-Can Caps and Nozzles. I
Patented July 23,1872.
UNITED, STATES JEROME R. HATHWAY, OF CORTLAND, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN OIL-CAN CAPS AND NOZZLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,820, dated July 23, 1872.
I, JEROME R. HATHWAY, of the village of Cortland, in. the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented Improvements in Can Stoppers and Spouts, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the combination of a stopper and spout for cans, more particularly oil-cans and such as are filled at a factory and sent out for general'distribution, the
contents being used in small quantities at a time, and in which a comparatively large opening is desired for filling them, but only a small one is needed in using the contents.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a transverse verticalseotion through the center of the cap and spout. Fig, 2 is a perspecb. Thecan being filled, the cap is screwed down, the cork pressing on the edges of the nozzle of the can, and the can and contents are sealed thus, ready for handling and trans portation.
When the contents are to be used a hole is made through the top of the cap at d, the base of the spout, and upon the inside thereof, and through the cork also. An opening is thus made from the spout into the can, and on tipping the can its contents will be delivered through the spout in quantities and at the point desired.
I do not claim the cap 0 or the cork b, nor
their combination. 1 do claim--- The combination of the cap 0 and the spout a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JEROME R. HATHWAY.
