MONUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1919.
Application filed August 14, 1918. Serial No. 249,798.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LIZETTE W. DE Wrr'r,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident new and useful Monument, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention has for its object the production of a particularly simple and efficient monument, which provides a space for storing tools, etc., a reservoir for catchmg and storing water, a means for taking care of the overflow from said reservoir, a faucet for drawing the water from the reservoir for flowers, etc., around the monument and means for providing an urn on the top of said monument with a continual supply of water. Other objects will appear throughout the specification.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the block to be used in place of the urn during the winter months.
This invention comprises generally, a monument having the top thereof shaped to collect rainfall as by having surfaces slanting outwardly and downwardly from the central portion thereof toward the outer sides, and by having a gutter around said outer sides, upper and lower compartments therein, the upper compartment opening through one of the outer sides, said opening being provided with a door, a reservoir for storing water above the upper compartment, having the upper portion thereof opening through said top, and a duct leading from the gutter to the reservoir, an urn on said top for closing the upper portion of the reservoir, means for supplying the urn with water from the reservoir, a duct leading from the reservoir to the upper compartment having means for controlling the flow of the water therethrough and a duct leading from the upper portion of the reservoir to the lower compartment for taking care of the overflow.
In the drawing, 1 represents the monument; 2 the sloping top, and 3 the gutter. The top 2 as here illustrated slants outwardly and downwardly from near the central portion thereof to near the outer sides of the monument. The gutter 3 is formed by a depression extending around the outer porting of the slanting top, said depression forming a ridge 1 around the outer sides of the top.
5 is the upper compartment, and 6 is the lower compartment. The upper compartment 5 has an opening 7 through one of the side walls of the monument, said opening being provided with a suitable door 8. The lower compartment 6 is formed by reducing the area of the lower portion of the compartment 5 thereby forming a ledge 9 between the upper and lower compartments upon which a flooring 10 rests.
11 is a reservoir for storing the rainfall obtained from the slanting top 2 in conjunction with the gutter 3, and 12 is a duct leading from the gutter to the upper portion of the reservoir 11 for carrying the rainfall from the gutter to the reservoir.
As here shown the reservoir 11 is arranged above the upper compartment 5 and the upper portion thereof opens through the top 2, said upper portion being enlarged as at 13.
141- is a duct leading from the reservoir 11 into the upper compartment 5, and 15 is a valve for controlling the flow of water therethrough.
16 is an overflow pipe leading from the upper portion of the reservoir into the lower compartment 6. 17 is a duct leading from the lower compartment to the outside of the I monument.
18 is the top ornament and as here shown is an urn for holding flowers, plants, etc., the base 19 thereof fitting the enlarged upper portion 13 of the reservoir 11 forming a cover therefor.
Means is provided for supplying said urn with water from the reservoir, and as here shown this urn is provided with an opening 20 in the bottom thereof, a funnel 21 extending through said opening into the reservoir 11 to near the bottom of said reservoir. A sponge or other suitable material 22 is placed in said funnel by means of which the water from the reservoir is supplied by capillary attraction to the flowers, etc., in the urn.
The upper compartment 5 is used for storing the tools, etc., necessary for the care of the surrounding lot and flowers and may be provided with hooks or pegs for hanging sion 24: which overlaps said portion 13 making the same weatherproof.
The floor 10 is removable and is preferably provided with means for lifting the same. 7
In winter the water is drawn off from the reservoir. The urn is locked in the upper compartment with the tools, etc., the top piece 23 put in place thereof, and the ducts 12 and 17 are plugged up with suitable corks.
What I claim is:
1. A monument having the top thereof shaped to collect rainfall, a compartment in the lower portion of the monument opening through one of the outer sides thereof, a water reservoir above said compartment, a duct leading from the top to the reservoir, a duct leading fro-m the reservoir to the compartment, and means in the compartment for controlling the flow through the latter duct, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A monument having the top thereof slanting outwardly and downwardly from the central portion toward the outer sides, a gutter around said outer sides, a compart ment in the lower portion of the monument opening through one of the outer sides thereof, a reservoir above said compartment for storing water, a duct leading from the gutter to the reservoir, a duct leading from the reservoir to the compartment, and means for controlling the flow through the latter duct, substantially as and for the purpose described. V
3. A monument having the top thereof slanting outwardly and downwardly from the central portion toward the outer sides, a gutter around the outer sides, upper and lower compartments in the lower portions thereof, the upper compartment opening through one of the outer sides, said opening being provided with a door, a reservoir above said upper compartment for storing water, a duct leading from the gutter to the portion of the reservoir to the lower compartment, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. A monument having the top thereof slanting outwardly and downwardly from the central portion toward the outer sides,
a gutter around said outer sides, a compartment in the lower portion of the monument opening through one of the outer sides thereof, a door for said opening, a reservoir for storing Water above said compartment having the upper portion thereof opening through said top, an urn on said top for closing the upper portion of the reservoir, means for supplying the urn with water from the reservoir, a duct leading from the gutter to the reservoir, a duct leading from the reservoir to the compartment, and means in said duct forcontrolling the flow of water therethrough, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A monument having the top thereof slanting outwardly and downwardly from the central portion toward the outer sides, a gutter around said outer sides, upper and lower compartments in said monument, the upper compartment opening through one of the outer sides, said opening being provided with door, a reservoir for storing water above the upper compartment, having the upper portion thereof opening through said top, a duct leading from the gutter to the reservoir, an urn on said top, for closing the 7 upper portion of the reservoir, means for supplying the urn with water from the reservoir, a duct leading from the reservoir to the upper compartment having means for controlling the flow of water therethrough, and a duct leading from the upper portion of the reservoir to the lower compartment, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 7
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, and State of New York, this 2nd day of Aug, 1918.
LIZETTE WV. DE WITT.
