CARL R. DAVIS, OF 'LE ROY, KANSAS.
COAT AND ARTICLE HOLDER FOR THEATER-SEATS.
Application filed April 12, 1918. Serial No. 228,112.
7 '0 all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, CARL R. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Le Roy, in the county of Coffey, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coat and Article Holders for Theater-Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in garment holders and particularly to devices for holding coats and small articles on the backs of theater seats.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and simple device of this character which will effectively support the coat and small articles on the back of the seat Without interference with the person occupying said seat.
' Another object is to provide a novel and improved device of this character which Will occupy a. very small space against the back of the seat when not in use.
A further object is to provide a novel and improved device of this character which when in use, will properly support the coat without interference with the owner.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the back of a theater seat showing my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged elevation of one of the supporting brackets, a portion of the wire member being shown in connection therewith,
Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevation of the bracket.
arched portion there is formed"a' smaller notch 14. Disposed in each of the arched portions is the coiled portion of the lower end of the arm 15 of an inverted angular U- shaped wire frame 16, said coils being represented by the reference character 17. The coils 17 have their ends turned over the edges of the arched portions and are disposed within the notches 14. The wire frame normally is held against the rear face of the seat back, the arms thereof extending upwardly, but when pulled from the back of the scat, these arms will engage against the lower walls of the notches, whereby further movement of the frame is prevented. The coat is pushed upwardly between the transverse portion of the frame and the back of the seat, and then permitted to drape itself over the said transverse portion, thus being out of the way of the owner, in his seat, and out of the way of the occupant of the seat to which the device is attached. If the weight of the coat is suflicient to move the frame against action of its spring portions, the arms will engage with the lower walls of the notches and prevent downward movement thereof beyond a point where the comfort of the owner of the coat is assured. The coils of the frame instantly and positively return the frame to its normal position against the back of the seat when relieved of the coat, or other garment there from.
Carried by the lower portions of the arms of the frame, but above the said brackets, is a basket member formed of wire, into which small articles may be placed, said basket being represented by the reference character 18. The arms 15 of the frame are longitudinally bowed, as shown, this bow being such that the intermediate portions of the arms are spaced from the seat back when the transverse portions of the frame engage the seat back, the bow thus providing space for the basket 18, which is attached to the concave sides of the arms.
There is thus provided a novel and simple device whereby a person can hang the coat or other garment on the back of the seat in front of him without discomfort or interference with his own movements or those of the occupant of the seat in front of him.
WVha-t is claimed is:
A coat and article holder comprising a pair of brackets adapted for attachment to tacle carried by'the frame arms on the con a surface, an inverted U-shaped frame havcave sides thereof. 10 7 ing the ends of its arms resiliently secured In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in said brackets, the arms of said frame bein the presence of two Witnesses.
5 ing bowed to lie spaced from a surface to i CARL R. DAVIS.
Which the brackets are attached When the Witnesses: transverse portion of the frame is in en- ODELL J. KIRKSEY, gagement with such a surface, and a recap E. R. LEE.
