PATENT onn on.
JAMES G. MASUMIAN', F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
FIGURE 'ToY- which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to games and toys, and more particularly to toys for the amusement of small children. j
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed crank actuated toy of this character, in which the turning of a shaft operates to alternately lower one. ob-
ject and elevate another, thetwo objects being so constructed and connected that they may be employed to illustrate various performances.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, :which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the a details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it" being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be ,made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 represents-a longitudinal vertical section of the toy constructed in accordance with this invention, parts being shown in elevation, and I y 2is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment illustrated the invention is shown applied to a hunterready to shoot a lion at bay, although obviously these figures need not necessarily be in this form.
The toy constituting'this invention comprices a supporting base in the form of a hollow casing 1, the floor 2 of which is sup- "ported a suitable distance above the surface on which the toy is to be mounted to'provide for the arrangement below it of the actuatingdmechanism presently to be described.
ising from the floor 2 on three sides thereof 1s aninclosure 3 which may be decorated in any suitablemannen'the front of Specification of Letters Patent.

said inclosure being left open to permit the operator to observe the movements of the actuated objects. I
Two objects 4 and 5 here shownfrespectively in the form of a lion and a hunter are arranged on the platform or floor 2 in longitudinally spaced relation and facing each other, the lion 4 being at bay, and the hunter 5 in a position ready to shoot. t The lion 4 has one of its hind legs arranged in advance of the other and which isfulorumed on a rod 6 extendin transversely of a slot 7 formed longitudinally in the platform 2, all four legs of the lion being positioned over the slot so that when movement is imparted to thejlion his legs will move through the slot for a purpose presently to be described. One of the front legs of the lion is disposed in advance of the other, being here shown positioned near the front end of the'slot and is connected by a link 8 with one end of a lever "of thefirst class shown at 9. This lever as here shown is in the form of a heavy wire coiled intermediately of its ends to provide a bearing 10 through which passes a staple or eye'boltll which operates as a fulcrum for the lever. The other end'of this lever '9 has a laterally extending finger 12 which is passed through a' slot 13 arranged longitudinally in a bar or plate 1e whichdepends from one leg of the hunter 5, said bar being I here shown made integral with the hunters leg and a slot 13 extended upwardly into the leg to a point midway the length 'thereof. A rod 15 arranged transversely of a slot 16 which extends longitudinally of the platform 2 at the end opposite that in which the lion is mounted operates as a guide for the hunter. This rod 15 extends through the slot '13 as is shown clearly in Fig. land operates to guide the vertical movement of the hunter, which is accomplished by means of the turning of a crank shaft 17 presently to be described, I The hunter is shown with one leg'arranged in advance of the other, both of his feet being disposed in longitudinal alinement and movable vertically through the slot 16. ,He is also shown equipped with a gun 18 which is aimingat the lion 4. a
The crank shaft 17 is arranged longitudinally in the casing 1 below the platform 2 with its ends mounted in suitable bearings in the end walls of said casing, and it is provided intermediately of its ends with a crank 19 with which the strap or bar 14 is connected. An operating handle 20 extends at right angles from the shaft 17 outside one end wall of the casing as is shown clearly in Fig. 1 to facilitate the turnin of the shaftfor a purpose presently to be escribed.
A spring 21 here shown arcuate in form has one end pivotally connected with the lower face of the platform 2 at one side of the slot 7 thereof and its free end is bent to form a fin er 22 which is engaged with therearwardl y projecting hind leg 23 of the lion and exerts its tension to facilitate a rocking movement of the lion, exerting a pull downward on his hind leg 23 on'the lowering .of the hunter which is 3000111 plishedby the "turning of he crank sha 17thereby causing the'lion to rear upwardly when the hunter moves downwardly and vice versa when the hunter movesupwarcllya pull downwardlyisexerted on the front leg 24 of the lion which is connected by the link 8 with the lever 9.
From the above descri tion it will be obvious that by grasping t e handle 20 of the crankshaft 17 and turning said shaft, the
.crank19 thereofwill operate to vertically .rnove the hunter 5 connected therewith by the strap/or bar 14, and when the crank 19 is j the result that the effect is more amusing.
turned upwardly into the position shown in F i-g l the lower end of slot 13 will engage the fingerl2 of lever 9. and force said lever end upwardly thereby rocking the lever on its fulcrum and causing its opposite end to It will thus be seen that the turning of the crank shaft will'operate to raise or lower i one of the objects represented by 5 and to rock the other object 4 on its fulcrumfi and when. these objects are made in the form here shown will present the appearanceof a hunter shooting a lion which is in a position facing him ready for attack. It will be noted that owing to the provision of the spring 21 and the slot and pin arrangement 12 and 13 a erky movement is imparted to the figures upon operation of the crankwith From the foregoing description, taken, in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.
I claim i v 1. A toy comprising a' supporting base having longitudinally spaced slots therein, a lever fulcrumed intermediately of. its ends between said sl0ts,;objects movable through said slots and connected with the opposite ends of said lever, and a crank shaft connected vwith one of said objects, and with one end of said lever whereby the turning of sa d operate to reciprocate the object connected therewith and to rock the other. i
