Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
. Application filed March 25, 1918. Serial No. 224,573.
To all whom it may come? n:
Be it known that I, FRANK IV. WALLACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, ink the county of .Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaw ing-Brushes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive, yet a highly eiiicient and durable shaving brush so constructed as to permit the use of any one of a number of bristle tufts with a single handle, whereby the brushes may be kept in a sterilized condition and a thoroughly sanitary brush applied to the handle and used for each individual shave.
With the foregoing general object in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of the improved brush;
Fig. 2 isa central longitudinal section thereof;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the plane of the line 3 3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a similar view on the plane indicated by the line 4 4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the core which is located within the bristles or fibers;
- Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the split sleeve in which the fibers are held; and
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the handle.
In the manufacture of the improved brush, an elongated core 1 is employed and the fibers or bristles 2 are folded between their ends around said core as seen clearly in Fig. l, said core having a contracted portion 3 between its ends and preferably located at its center. One end of a bristle holder formed of a split sleeve 4 surrounds the inner ends of the fibers 2 and is provided with inwardly extending teeth 5 which embed in said fibers opposite the contracted portion 3 of the core l, -said end of the sleeve 4 being held against expansion by a suitable ring 6 which is by preference soldered or brazed thereon. After insertion of the bristles or fibers, the split 7 of the sleeve 4 is also sealed and the end of said sleeve opposite the teeth 5 is closed by a .disk 8 soldered or brazed thereto, or otherwise iixed, for purposes of rigidity. In order to permit any moisture to drain from the sleeve when seeping in between the fibers or bristles, said sleeve is provided with a plurality of notches 9 adjacent the closing disk 8.
An appropriate handle 10 which may be constructed of metal or any other suitable material is provided, said handle having on its front end a socket 1l preferably formed of metal and rendered slightly expansible by longitudinal slits 12. The sleeve 4 is receivable in the socket 11 when the brush is iii use, and the ring 6 will then prevent excessive inward movement of said sleeve. When the bristles are to ber sterilized, said bristles and the sleeve 4 are removed bodily from the socket 1l for this purpose. Another sleeve carrying a previously sterilized set of bristles may then be inserted for use upon the next person to be shaved. It will thus be obvious that the device will be highly instrumental in preventing the spread of contagious diseases which now takes place from the use of the same shaving brush upon all parties without eective sterilization.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be obvious that although my invention is of comparatively simple and inexpensive nature, it will be highly efficient and desirable. It may be further pointed out however that the materials employed are such as to effectively resist the action of either moist or dry heat used for sterilizing, it being unnecessary to employ any glue or cementV for securing the bristles in place, since this end is attained to great advantage by the teeth 5 in coaction with the core 1.
Since probably the best results are obtained from the several details shown and described, these details are by preference employed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may well be made. It is also to be understood that the invention may be embodied in numerous forms for purposes' other than shaving.
I claim: In a shaving brush, a oiie-piece core provided with a reduced center, a tutt of bristles Whose rear end surrounds said Core7 e bristle holder formed of e split slee *e reeeiving said rear ends of said bristles and closed around the saine, one end of said sleeve having integral inwardly extending' teeth embedded in said bristles opposite the contracted center of said core, e ring secured around this end of said sleeve to prevent expansion thereof7 the other end of the sleeve having Ventilating notches, a.
closing plate secured to said last nzuned end of the sleeve to prevent expansion of such end, and a handle having e socket receiving said sleeve, seid ring aeting to liinit the insertion of said sleeve into seid socket.
