Be it known that I, DUDLEY S. SEYMOUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak lark, in the county of-Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in'Feeding Mechanism for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the fig feeding mechanism for a sewing machine of the above characterwhercin the feeding device may be positively operated from a main rotating shaft located in a horizontal arm from the outer end of which the work supporting arm is suspended.
A further olncct of the invention is to provide a feeding mechanism of the above 1 character with an auxiliary feeding device and with means located in the work support ing arm for giving a differential movement thereto.

As illustrated in the drawings, the invention is applied to a sewing machine having a standard -1 with a supporting case '2, whereby vit may be secured to the table.
Mounted on the standard at the upper end thereof and projecting laterally therefrom IS an overhanging arm 8 in which is mounted a shaftl. -Projeeti'ng forwardly from thestandard 1 is an arm 5 which supports a horizontal arm 6.. The horizontal arm 6 is substantially parallel with the overhanging arm 3 and carries'at its opt-er end a depending post 7. At the lower end of the post 7 is the work supporting arm 8 which extends toward the overhanging arm and has its free end terminating underneath the free end of the overhanging arm. This work supporting arm is, therefore, arranged at an angle to the vertical plane containing the longitudinal center of the overhanging arm, that is, the plane of the overhanging arm.
Mounted in the horizontal arm 6 15 the main shaft 9, which extends through the arm 5. Said. main shaft is journaled in. the hearing 10 at one end thereof and in the bearings 11 and 12 adjacent the other end thereof. The shaft is driven by a belt wheel 13 which is located on the outer end-thereof. The shaft 9 intermediate its bearings 11 and i2 is formed with a crank 14 and pitman 15 cooperating therewith is connected to adepending arm 16 on the shaft 4 in the overhanging arm 3 and serves as a means for oscillating the same.
Mounted in the forward end of the Overhanging arm is a necdlehar 17 carrying needles 18. On the adjacent end of the shaft 4 is an arm 19 which is connected by a link 20 to a collar on the needle bar so that the oscillations of the'shaft- 4 will be imparted to the needle bar.
The material is held on the'work supporting arm 8 by 'a presscr foot 21 which is fixed to the lower end of a presser bar 22. The link may be shifted by hand lever 73 which is pivoted at 74; to it suitable lug on the inner face of the work supporting arm and is connected by a link 75 to said linlr 70. At the outer end of the lever 73 there is a hand piece 76 which extends to the outer face of the work supporting arm so that the lever 1nay be readily adgusted and this hand piece may be formed with suitable devices for holding the lever in adjusted positions. 1
From the above description it will be apparent that l have provided a sewing machine having a. suspended work supporting arm with a feeding mechanism wherein the main feed do is positively actuated from a train of mec anism connected to the main shaft at a point directly over the work sup porting By this arrangement of parts the, train-of mechanism between the main shaft and the feed leer includes very few parts whiclnof course, increases the efi icieney of the feeding mechanis It is obvious that minor changes in-the details of construction end nrrengement of parts may be made, Without departing froin cated in said horizontal arm, a work supporting arm carried by said horizontal arm, a feeding device carried by said work supporting arm, means for positively actuating seid feeding device from the main shaft in the horizontal arm and driving-connections between the main shaft and the stitch form-' mg mechanism.
