and the cost of UNITED STATES P v HELEN G. Mormon, or azvnnsrnn, mnmors.

Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Mar. 18, 19319.
Application filed June 20, 1918. Serial No. 241,028.
Be it known that I, HELEN G. Mormon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Cook and State or Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements. in Detachable Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
- This invention has reference generally to improvements-in that class of inventions known as buckles, buttons and'clasps, and
more particularly relates to a detachable button.
It is the primary aim and object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character designed in the form of a separable fastener of the head and socket type, the socket member of which is adapted to be carried permanently on the garment, While the button proper is capable of being quickly disconnected therefrom at the time it is desired to laundry the Waist, thus obviating the necessity of subjecting the button proper to the washing action and thereby increasingthe longevity of the button and in addition prevents disfiguring thereof.
More particularly this invention consists in the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein the shank of the button is reduced to form a shoulder while the shank is constructed in the form of a head for detachable engagement with the socket and the relation of the parts, is such that when the head is engaged in the socket member the shoulder is maintained in abutting relation with the outer face of the socket member to normally hold the shank at right angles with respect to the outer face of the socket member regardless of the angular disposition of strain on the button when in use, thus preventing accidental disen agement of the button.
mong the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character described with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple production low and the, efli ciency high. 7
Otherobjects as Well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of this invention will ,be more readily apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
' and is provided with 'slots 13 and The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a horizontal section through the goods showing the button applied thereto and in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a similar view on an enlarged scale, the button being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views,
to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly to the accompanying drawings there is provided a button proper 1 from which projects an integral shank 2. The outer portion of the shank is reduced as at 3- to form an annular shoulder 4 for a purpose that will presently appear, while the reduced portion is provided with an annular groove 5 to form a head 6.
The socket member generally designated 7, .is secured to one side edge of a garment 8 by means of suitable stitches 9 and consists of a plate or disk like body which is provided with an annular inturned flange 10, to in turn provide a groove 11 for a purpose that will presently appear. The plate like body is also formed with a circular socket 19 thereof, the socket being preferably depressed in the direction of the flange opposed slots 13 in its walls near the body. A circular spring member 14- is seated in the groove 11, while arms 15 formed at the terminals of the springs are arranged in spaced parallel relation with each other and are seated in the socket 12 as indicated so that When the head 6 is passed into the socket 12, the arms 15 will be spread permitting of'the passage of the head, but subsequent to the passage of the head, the arms will expand automatically and engage the groove 5, so as to maintain the shoulder 4 in intimate contact with the adjacent face of the plate like body of i the socket 7 as indicated in the drawings, the
tion when the button holder 16 in the other project partially within the portion 17 of the-garment 8 is engaged over the button proper 1 and about the shank 2- thereof no lateral strains on the shank will be sufficient to rock, or swin the head on the shank Within the socket since such swinging movement is prevented by the annular shoulder l which is held in intimate contact With the plate like body of the socket member.
Of course, When it is desired to laundry the garment the button proper may be disconnected from the socket member so that it will be unnecessary to subject the button proper and its shank, et cetera, to the Washing action. The socket member owing to its flat formation and construction Will not be injured and may be carried at all times on the garment. V
.lt is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description or the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently Widely diiierent-embodiments of this invention could be made Without departing from the scope thereof it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense. is also to be understood neeaeoo that the language used in the following claim is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to tail therebetween.
What is claimed is A device or the character described consisting of a button proper, a shank projecting therefrom and having the outer end reduced to form an annular shoulder, the reduced. portion being provided with an annular groove to form a head, a socket member consisting of a plate like body, a central circular socket formed in the body and having opposed slots in the walls thereof, a spring member seated in the plate like body, arms formed at the terminals of the spring member and seated in the slots and projecting partially within the socket for engagement With the groove of the reduced portion upon the insertion of the head in the socket for maintaining the annular shoulder against the adjacent face of the body, the shoulder acting as a means for preventing swinging of the head in the socket When the button is subjected to lateral strains subsequently as described.
In testimony whereof I my signature.
"HELEN G. MQNRQE.
