AUTOMATIC FLAME-REGULATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY MICHEL, a c1t1- -zen of the United States, residing at Sublette, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Flame-Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heating lamps, particularly to those of the type used 1n connection with incubators and similar devices, and has for its object the provision of thermostatically controlled means associated with a lamp of the wick type for sliding a damper or hood member over a desired part'of the wick whereby the area being burned, and consequently the size of the flame, may be regulated.
An important object is the provision of a structure of this character associated with a lamp and provided with novel means for guiding the sliding hood in its movement- A further object is, the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, eflicient and durable in use, not likely to get outof order, and a general improvement of the art.-
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of' parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp equipped with my device and associated with a portion of an incubator and showing a conventional thermostat connected therewith,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates a portion of an incubator provided with a conventional rheostat B and having associated therewith a lamp C of the wick type.
In carrying out my invention I provide the burner 10 of a lamp with a supporting member 11 from which extends a horizontally disposed bracket 12 which has its outer end provided with cars 13 between which is pivoted a bell-crank lever 14:, which has its horizontal arm connected by a link 15 with the thermostatic device B. A vertically upstanding collar 16 is disposed upon the support 11 and surrounds the burner 10. Secured upon the burner at the upper end of the portion where the wick protrudes'is a band-like member 17 which cooperates with a bracket 18 provided with trackways 19 secured upon the outside of the collar 16 in horizontal alinement with the member 17. The collar 16 is provided with an opening 20 in one side, which is of an inverted U-shape.
A damper or hood member 21 is disposed within the opening 20 and is adapted to slide upon the bracket 18 and the member 17 in straddling relation to the portion of the burner above the member 17. It will be seen that the member 17 and bracket 18, together with the opening 20, constitute guide means for proper movement of the hood member. The outer end of the hood member 21 is connected by a link 22 with the vertical arm of the bell-crank lever '14.
The operation of the device is as follows The wick being turned up the desired degree by the ordinary turning handle 23 provided for that purpose, it is lighted and the lamp is used in the ordinary manner. In case the degree of heat thrown off by the lamp becomes excessive for the purpose for which it is intended, the expansion of the thermostat B will cause the link 15 t be moved vertically, whereupon the bell-crank lever 14 will operate to move the hood member 21 to a certain degree over the wick of the lamp, the degree of movement being governed by the degree of movement of the thermostat. If the heat subsequently falls too low opposite movement of the thermostat will move the hood member out of obstructing relation to the flame.
In order to permit adjustment of the delicacy or sensitiveness of the device, I provide the end of the link 22 associated with the hood 21, with a plurality of holes 24: through any selected one of which a pin 25 may be passed which passes through and connects the link with the hood whereby the initial position of the free end of the hood in respect to the wick may be adjusted, as will be understood. If desired to extinguish the lamp entirely, the operator may grasp either arm of the bell-crank lever and thereby move thermostat.
It will of course be understood that I re serve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement oi parts 'as will not depart from the spirit of the invention, nor the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a lamp burner including a platform and a wick sleeve extending vertically therefrom, a cylindrical collar disposed upon and rising from said platform, a horizontally disposed supporting member disposed upon said wick sleeve in encircling relation thereto, an inverted U- shaped hood slidable upon said supporting member, said collar being provided with an opening conforming to the cross sectional configuration. of said hood member, said hood member having one end projecting through said opening, a guide bracket secured externally upon said collar and having a horizontally extending portion disposed immediatel below said opening and serving as a support for the projecting end of said hood member, and means for sliding said hood member whereby said hood member may be disposed in an obstructing position in relation to the w'ck of the burner.
Q, In combination with a lamp burner including a platform and a wick sleeve, a horizontal supporting member secured upon the wick sleeve in encircling relation thereto, an inverted U-shaped hood slidablv disposed upon said supporting member in straddling relation to said sleeve, said collar being provided with an opening conformin to the cross sectional configuration of said hood, said hood being slidable through said opening and having one end projecting beyond said collar, a bracket secured externally upon said collar and including a horizontallyex tending portion forming a support for the projecting end of said hood, the horizontal portion or said bracket being provided with an upwardly struck rib disposed between the sides of said hood, an operating link adjustabl v connected with the projecting end of said hood, and means for moving said link whereb id h od may be slid into an obstructing position in relation to the wick of the burner.
