vices, and has for its object the'provision of a device adapted to be associated with a stove pipe at or near its point of "connection with a stove and embodying a rotary fan whereby suction may be produced within the pipe for causing a proper draft upon the fire. I I

Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 5'designates the casing as awhole which includes the front and back --wa11s6 and 7, theemlWsllB and/the top "and bottom walls 9 and 10 respectively which are connected at one end by a curved portlon 11. Adjacent one end of the casing the top and bottom walls are provided with holes, 12 and 13 surrounded by flanges 1 1 whereby the device may be inserted bet-ween the ends of stove pipe sections or inserted between the top of the stove and the stove pipe.- The casing 5 is divided by a partition 15 which,'together with the wall 6 and advjacent portions of the end walls 8 and 11 and also the top and bottom walls, defines a compartment, 17. The space between the partition 15 and the side wall 7 top and bot- .tom. walls and end walls, is divided by a itransverse plate 18 into two chambers 16 and 19,-the former of which-is in position to connnunicate with the openings 12 and 13 in the top and bottom plates and the latter, of which constitutes a fan chamber. The
partition15 has formed therein a relatively large opening 20 establishing communication between the compartment 17 and the fan chamber 19. The transverse plate 18 terminates short of the bottom wall. 10 so that communication may be established,

the front side 6 of the casing the shaft 21 has suitably secured thereon a pinion-23 which meshes with a gear 24 revoluble upon a stubshaft 25 secured tot-he front wall 6. The gear 24 is provided with an operating handle 26 whereby it may be rotated for eventually-rotating the fan as will be obvious. In order that the fan may not be rotated in the wrong direction I provide upon the end of the shaft 21 at the reanwall 7 a ratchet 27 engaged by a spring pressed pawl 28. I
Disposed withinthe compartment 16 and pivoted transversely thereof as shown at 29 is a plate 30 movable between a vertical position as shown in Fig. 5 and a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 6 and adapted to close the portion of the hole 13 lyin' within the compartment 16. 33 in the top wall 9 adjacent the hole 12 therein. At its outer end the wire handle 3i is looped to provide a finger engaging portion 34 and adjacent its pivoted end is provided with an offset portion engaging the hole 33 for holding the plate 30 in a vertical position as clearly shown in Fig. 5.
The operation of the device as follows: hen the plate 30 is in its raised position and extends vertically as shown in Fig. 5, the smoke pipe is entirely unobstructed and the draft is normal. If however the fire smokes and does not burn properly, in order to create an eliicient draft, it is merely necessary to disengage the offset portion oi the wire handle 31 from the hole and allow the plate 30 to descend. to its horizontal position closing one halr ot' the hole 13. The smoke and other products of com bastion will then pass upwardly through the portion of the hole 13 within the com partment 1'? and will pass on in the usual manner. The operator then grasps the handle 26 and rotates the gears 24 and 23 whereupon the fan will be set in motion and he smoke will be drawn from the compartment 1''? through the opening 20 into the fan chamber 19 and will be forced out under the transverse plate 18 into the compartment 16 whence it will be discharged into the portion oi? the stove pipe extending above the casing. The degree of forced draft thus caused is regulated entirely by the speed at which the gear is rotated. When the device has been operated for a length of time sutlicient to cause the fire to burn satisfactorily, the plate 30 is raised to its ver tical posit-ion, whereupon the normal draft will be resumed.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a device suitable for attachment at or near the junction of a stove pipe with a stove whereby any desired degree of draft may be produced quickly and simply.
It will of course be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the :t'orm construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of my invention. nor the scope of the sub joined claims.
Having thus described my invention 1 claim 1. A device of the character described, comprising a casing provided in its top and. bottom walls with openings surrounded by flanges adapted for engagement within the adjacent ends of spaced stove pipe sections, a vertical longitudinal partition plate dividing said casing into'two compartments, said partition plate extending across the centers of said openings a vertical transverse plate extending from one side of said casing to said partition and su'dividingone of said compartments into a fan chamber and a chamber arranged between said openings, said partition being provided with an opening establishing connnunication between the fan chamber and the other of said compartmcnts, said plate being spaced from the bottom wall to provide an opening establishing communication between said fan chamber and said last named chamber a fan journaled within said fan chamber, means for rotating said fan, and a plate pivoted beneath said transverse plate at the'bottom wall or" the casing and movable selectively to seat upon the bottom wall for-closing c0m-- munication through the asscociatedhaltcf the lowermost of said first 'namediopenings'r: and said last named chamber or to'seat upon 9 said transverse plate for closingcommunica tion between said fan chamberand said last i named chamber. 2.
