lMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,779, dated July 23, 1872.
Specification describing an Improved Pump,
invented by WILSON BARNES, of Maquoketa,
in the county of Jackson and State of Iowa.
This invention consists in constructing the hollow posts of a pump of ordinary wrought metal galvanized tubing, such as is well known and common in the arts, put together in sections, which are united by internally screw-threaded couplings, whereby a most durable and valuable article is obtained at a cost less than the ordinary metal pump.
In the drawing, the figure is a side elevation partly broken out.
A is the pump; B, the pipe leading to cylinder; (J, a T-pipe; 0, another T dischargepipe; andD, an air-chamber. These sections are different sizes'of the ordinary pipes sold in the market for various purposes, and are galvanized before being connected together to form a pump-stock. The cylinder E is cast on a cold core, so as to be chilled on the inside, and the plunger is cast in a chill on the outside. They are both thereby chilled and casehardened. F is a close cap and bracket, cast together, and provided with lever for operat ing piston-rod. This is Supported by braces G, which rest upon the platform H. I is a small brass cock in pipe B, placed in the ground below freezing-point, and operated by a rod, 11, passing through platform. Thus there can be no possibility of freezing in the coldest spells. The advantage'this pump has over the ordinary pump is, that it can be varied in size or length, with but comparatively little expense, by simply removing oneor more sections of pipe and putting in place thereof Witnesses:
