To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JULES D. BIsoaYART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Geer ia, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Cotter-Pin Removers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and igures of reference. marked thereon, which form a partof this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pin removers and more particularly to devices especially adapted for removing cotter pins or pins of analogous structures.
The important object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which will exert a direct pull on the pin under operation, and thereby obviate the necessityof bending the cotter pin, such bending being necessary in the removal of pins with the tools or implements now in use.
A further object of the invention is to arrange the elements of an implement of this character wherein the leverage of the moving parts 'thereof is greatly increased.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device.

Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4--4 of Fig. 3, and Fi'g. 5 is a detail view partly in section showing the application of the device, one end being held against the object from which the cotter pin is to be pulled.
Reference now being had tothe details of the drawings `by numeral, l indicates one of the handle members having an integral jaw 2, the jaw and handle being constructed of transversely curved metal, the curved portion of the latter acting as atrough or guide for an extracting bar 3, positioned therein, said extracting bar 3 having an integral hook 4 formed at one end thereof, while a shoulder 5 formed at the opposite'end acts as a finger hold to receive the thumb of the operator to permit the extracting member to be forced forwardly.
Provided along the upper edge ofthe extracting member 3 are teeth 6 forming a vratchet to be hereinafter more fully described. The ears 7 are integrally .formed on the handle member 1 and these ears are apertured to receive the pivot pin 8 which has a head 9 on one of its ends, and an adjusting nut 10 on the other.
Secured to the handle 1 by means ofthe pin 8 is a jaw 11, the same being substantially U-shaped in cross section to provide a housing for the spring 12, one end of which lies flush with the lower wall 13 of the jaw 11, the intermediate portion thereof being bent around the pivot pin 8, as at 14, and also curved around the pin 15 connecting the side walls of the jaw 11, the opposite end of the spring 12 lying flush with the upper edge of the extracting bar 3, and exerting suiiicient pressure thereon to allow movement of the same but, at the same time, prevent the bar 3 from sliding from its guideway during handling of the tool.
Pivotally connected to the pivot pin 8 is a handle 16, also 'substantially inverted U- shape in cross section, to house one end of the pawl 17 which has one of its ends pivotally connected to the vhandleby means of the pin 18, the opposite end of the pawl 17 being curved downwardly to coperate with ratchet teeth 6 of the extracting bar 3.
In the operation of the device, as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the hook 4 is inserted through the eye of the cotter pin and the handles operated so that the pawl will impart to the bar 3 a step by step move- 'ment, until the front end of the jaw 2 bears against the object 3 through which the pin passes, whereupon the continued movement of the handle members will further move the bar 3 to pull the pin from its seat.
A spring 19 has its intermediate portions coiled around the pin 18, one of the free ends thereof being in engagement with the under side of the handle 16, the opposite end of the spring engaging the pawl 17, and thereby holding the handles 1 and 16 in expanded relation with each other. In order that the handle 16 may be restricted in its movement in one direction, a shoulder 11x is provided on the jaw 11, this shoulder forming an abutment for the edge 20 of the handle 16. In the operation of the device, the hook 4 is inserted in the eye of a cotter pin, the handle 16 then forced toward the handle 1 with the result that the pawl 17 engages one or more ratchet teeth of the extracting bar 3, consequently sliding the bar 3 rearu'ardly. It follows that, on 'releasin the handle 16, the same is forced outward y by the tension of the spring 19, or in a posltion to be again depressed, the paWl sliding over the ratchet teeth 6. This operation is repeated until the cotter pin is extracted from the opening in which the same Was positioned.

A device for removing cotter pins comprising a grooved bar having oppositely disposed ears projecting from its edges, a pivotal pin mounted in apertures in said ears, a U shaped jaw mounted upon said ivot between said ears.,l the opposite Walls o the jaw having shoulders in the edges thereof, a sliding extractor mem'ber movable Within lthe grooved bar and having serrations upon the outer edge, a sprin pressed handle U shaped in cross section and pivotally mounted upon said pin, a portion of said handle adjacent to its pivot end being adapted to connect with said shoulders to limit the outer swinging movement of the handle, and a spring pressed paWl mounted upon the handle and engaging said sei-rations, as set forth.
2. A cotter pin remover comprising a stationary, grooved bar, one end of which curves outwardly and is provided with ears proiecting from the opposite Walls thereof, a pivot pin mounted in apertures in said ears, an extracting member movable within the hollow portion of said bar and having serrations upon the outer edge, a fixed jaw mounted between said ears and Achanneled and provided with shoulders in its edges, a handle mounted upon said? pivot and adapted to contact with said shoulders to limit its movement in one direction, a spring-pressed pawl carried by the handleand adapted to enga e the serrationsA upon said extractor mem er, a leaf spring resting upon the bottom of the channel of the fixed jaw and having a bearing underneath said pivot, and a stationary pin mounted in said ears over which pin the spring has a bearing, the outer free end of the spring adapted to rest upon the serrations of the extractor member.
