IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,773, dated July 23, 1872.
Improvement in VWa Shing-Machines, invented by THOMAS J. WILKINSON, of Highland, in the county of Doniphan and State of Kansas.
Figure 1 is a detail longitudinal section of my improved machine taken through the line .fr av, Fig. 4'. Fig. 2 is a detail view,` showing the detachable bearings for the cylinder. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the same taken through the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a top view of the machine. Fig. 5 is a detail section ofthe cylinder taken through the line z z, Fig. 1.

My invention has for its obj ect to furnish an improved washing-machine simple in construction and effective in operation, doing its work quickly and thoroughly; and it consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the machine, as'hereinafter more fully described.
. A represents the box of the machine, which is maderectangular in form, and is supported upon legs B of such a length as to raise the machine to a convenient height. The bottom C formed flanged-strips c` to receive the flanged upper edges of the furnace D, which is thus suspended from the said bottom G. The furnace D is provided with a door, d1, for the insertion of the fuel, and with a pipe, d2, for carrying off the smoke and other gaseous products of combustion. E is a cylinder formed by attaching slats to three circular disks, one at each end and one at the center, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. To one of the end disks of the cylinder E is attached a journal, which ed in a vertical dovetailed groove in the side of the box, where it is detachably secured in place by a key, G, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4. H is the crank by which the Acylinder E is revolved, the shaft of which passes through the side of the box A, through the end disk of the cylinder E, and into or through a square hole in the central disk of said cylinder, so as to pivot the cylinder to the side of the box A, and carry it with it in its revolution. To the end parts of the sides of the box A are attached blocks I, which are so arra-n ged as to receive the ends of the spring-bars J, to the upper andlower ends of which are pivoted the ends of the small uted rollers K, which are held down upon the cylinder E with Suflicient force to squeeze out the water from the clothes being operated upon, the elasticity of the spring-bars J allowing the said rollers K to adjust themselves to the varying thickness of the clothes. ranged to both bear upon the upper part of the cylinder E, or both bear upon the lower part, or for one to bear upon the upper and the other upon the lower part of said cylinder. The last' arrangement is preferable for ordinary use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent- The combination of the cylinder E, con- Witnesses:
