INVENTOR WITNESSES 01-15 E. 5 224] Zz WM BY W a! ATTORNEY OTIS E. STULTZ, OF HENRY, WEST VIRGINIA.
PROTECTOR FOR nnELs.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
Application filed April 21, 1917. Serial No. 163,757.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTIS E. STUL'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Henry, in the county of Grant and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protectors for Reels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in film guards and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for holding the film used in moving picpure machines in proper position on the rec Another object of the invention is to provide means for removably supporting a card or the like, bearing the title of the film.
Another object of the invention is to make the guard of sufiicient thickness so as to 8X tend from one flange of the reel to the other, thus avoiding the danger of the guard getting between the edges of the film and the flanges of the reel.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or, corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of the reel with part broken away to show the invention in place.
Fig. guard.
In these figures, the reel is indicated at 1 and the film rolled thereon at 2, while 3 indicates the guard placed around the rolled up film and located between the flanges of the reel. This guard consists of a loop of coiled wire 4, with the coils flattened, as
2 is a perspective view of part of the Copies of this patent may be obtained for shown, so as to fill up the spacebetween the 5 indicates a plate having its ends each provided with a hole 7 for receiving a hook 8 formed on the end of the wire of the coil. This plate connects the two ends of the coil spring together and it is provided with turned over flanges 9 for receiving a card which may have printed thereon the title of the film carried by the rec While I prefer to place the guard in position by simply stretching the same over the reel, I may, if desired, make the plate detachable from one of the hooks, so that the same may be unhooked to remove from the reel.
After the film is rolled on the reel and the guard placed in position, the film is securely held from unwinding and due to the flattened feature of the coil spring there is no danger of the guard getting between the edges of the film and the flanges. The guard may be quickly and easily removed from the reel and just as easily replaced.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my inven ion:
1. In combination with a reel having side flanges, a film guard comprising a coil spring flanges. reduced, as at 6, and
adapted to surround the outer strip of the film, said coils being flattened so as to engage with the side flanges, to prevent lateral movement of the guard, and means connecting the ends of the coil spring together.
2. In combination with a reel having side flanges, a film guard comprising a coil spring having its coils flattened adapted to encircle the outer strip of the film, a metal strip connecting the ends of the said spring, said strip having its edges bent to form flanges for the reception of cards.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
