' IMP ROVEMENT IN SOLES FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,752 dated July 23,1872.
. ened sole. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same after being cut or skived in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same after the skive is turned over and flattened down to form a sole of the required length. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the under side of a lengthened sole with a raised projection formed thereon. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal central section, showing the afipplication of a heel to the sole shown in ig. 4.. y
(Do-increase the length of a shortened sole in such manner as to produce therefrom a sole of the required length, whether it be a completeor entire sole, 'or only a sole of less length than that of a complete sole, is the object of my invention; which consists in a sole formed by cutting or skivin g the rear portion of a shortened sole, the skive being bent over and flattened down by pressure, so as to permanently remain in a horizontal plane or in the same plane as the shortened sole before being skived, by which method of producing soles a materialsaving of stock is effected.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe themanner in which I have carried itout. i
In the said drawing, A is a shortened sole, which is skived or cut on its upper side on the line a a, so as to divide as near as possible the rear portion of the sole from-00 to b, the distance of the line a a or commencement of the cut from the rear line 0 c of the sole being equal to the length of the portion to be added to form a sole of the required length, whether it be a sole of the full length to extend under the whole heel, or a solepf a length somewhat less than a complete sole and to extend under a portion only of the heel. The skive d is now turned back and flattened down by pressure so as to permanently remain in the same plane as the main portion of the shortened sole from which it was skived, whereby a sole of increased and the desired length. is produced, as seen in Fig. 3. To give a finish to the under side of the sole a raised projection, 0, may be formed by forcing the sole on the line b b c a into a groove made in the bed of the press, and when the sole is so 'formed the fl'ont line of the heel is intended to abut against the rear of the projection. From the foregoing it will be seen that a shortened sole may be increased in length and still possess the requisite degree of strength at the shank, and a considerable saving in stock thereby effected.
Claim.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A sole for boots and shoes formed by skiving the rear portion of a shortened sole and turning over and flattening down the skive,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth. Witness my hand this 26th day of June,
J. W. ALDRICH, G. D. HUNTER.
