REEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
Application led December 7, 1918. Serial No. 265,763.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES L. MARRIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in reels, and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with hose, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character with novel and improved means whereby the reel is conveniently and effectively mounted in applied position, and whereby a hose vor the like wound upon the reel is protected against the elements.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved reel whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive, and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be denitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical, sectional view taken through a reel constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken through my improved reel as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved device comprises two side frames A each substantially in the form of an equi-lateral triangle with the apex thereof forwardly directed.
The frames A are spaced apart in horizontal alinement and the base members 1 of the frames are tied or connected by the rigid straps or members 2 arranged in predetermined vertical spaced relation. Disposed through the straps or members 2 substantially midway thereof is a removable bolt or pin 3 which also coacts with the bracket 4 whereby the frames A may be supported for swinging movement in a horii xedto the upper end portions of the frames A and the extensions or arms 5, whereby the reel Rand the hose or the like wound upon the reel are protected against the'elements.
The reel R comprises a central shaft or axle 7 rotatably disposed through the apices of the frames A and through the lower 4end portions of the extensions or arms 4. Detachably engaged with an end portion of the ,shaft or axle 7 is a crank 8 or the like whereby the requisite rotation may be imparted to the reel R. When not in use the crank 8 may be removed and suspended from the hood H or the like.
Radiating from the opposite end portions of the shaft or axle 7 are the arms 9 preferably produced from elongated fiat strips of metal, and the outer end portion of each of said arms 9 is initially slotted longitudinally so that a side marginal portion of the arm may be bent inwardly to aii'ord a finger or lug l0 substantially at right angles to the arm.
Bolted or otherwise secured to each pair of longitudinally alined fingers or lugs 10 is a metallic slat or strip 11 about which the hose or the like is adapted to be wound, and it will be self-evident that the second or unbended marginal portion of each of the arms 9 afford guards 12 to hold the hose wound upon the reel against displacement.
By having my improved device supported for swinging movement, preferably in af horizontal plane, it will be obvious that the device may be readily swung into a position to facilitate the winding of the hose or the like upon the reel R without the necessity of any particular adjustment or laying out of the hose or the like.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a reel constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, andv it willl also be obvious that' my invention .is susoeptible of Asome change vrand modification `without departing from theprinciples and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the .precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in Carrying out my invention inpraetiee except as hereinafter claimed.
