CLAUDE B. HOSTETLER, OF OSTRANDER, OHIO.
"u vDrawer, Toor.. f.
Application filed January 25, 1919.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CLAUDE B. Hos'rEtmnR, a citizen lof the United States, residing at Ost-rander, in the county of Delaware and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dental tools; and more particularly to a device for holding tooth crowns, caps, and the like, when the same are being operated upon.
The object of the invention is to so construct the same that it will be durable, efficient, can be easily and cheaply manufactured, the parts composing the same can be easily assembled and disassembled, and as said parts will be constructed of standard sizes they can be easily restored should a part become worn or useless.
In the drawings forming a part of the invention, and in which like symbols of reference represen-t corresponding parts in the several views Figure 1 is an elevation of the device showing the same in its operative position;
Fig. 2 a sectional view of the same, with the parts there separated;
Fig. 8 a view of the perforated elastic tip, composed, preferably of cork, rubber, or the like; and,
Fig. '4 is a view of a modified form of the l tip.
In the drawings, 1 represents the handle of the device, having an internally threaded sleeve 2 secured in its upper portion; 3 a portion of the sleeve extending beyond the upper surface of the handle; and 4 the .screw-threads in the sleeve. 5 is a perforated collar, Ihaving ribs 6 formed in the same; and 7 a counterbore in its lower portion to receive the extension 3 -of the handle and thus hold the parts of the device in operative relation. l
8 is a wire or rod, preferably angular, as shown to prevent it rotating in the collar 5, said collar having an angular portion 9 to receive the same; and 10 are screw-threads on the rod to engage screw-threads 4 on the collar.

formed, preferably, with a flared opening 13, and a perforation 14, adapted to receive rod 8. The flared opening 13 receives head 15 of rod 8, said head, may if desired, be angular, though said construction is not absolutely necessary. 12a is modification of tip.
16 indicates the crown in its position ready for the hand of the operator.
17 is a. milled enlargement on collar 5 for the purpose of holding the same and operating the tool.
The operation of the device will be clear from the foregoing description. The operator grasps the handle 1 and revolves the same holding the milled portion with the other hand, the rod feeding in the meantime into the Ahandle and thus compresses the inner portion of the tip, expanding the same. laterally in a uniform manner, producing a :perfect working holder for the crown or other element operated upon.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A dental instrument, consisting of a handle, a collar having an angular interior adapted to be received upon said handle, a rod having an angular po-rtion to operate in the collar, and a tip for the rod, said tip adapted to be expanded when the handle of the device is rota-ted.
2. A dental instrument, provided with a handle, a collar w-orking inconjun-ction with the handle, a rod adapted to operate in the collar, said rod formed with a hea-d, and a perforated resilient tip adapted to be received on the rod and expanded by the same .when the device is operated.
3. A dental instrument, having a handle provided with a threaded-sleeve, said sleeve extending beyond the top of the handle, a collar formed with a counterbore adapted to receive the extended portion of the sleeve, rib-s in the collar, and a rod having threads formed on the same to engage with threads of the collar, and a head on the rod to engage the holding means.
4. In a device of the character described, a handle having a threaded sleeve, a collar adapted to Work in conjunction With the In testimony whereof I aix my Signature bangle, means for connecting the eoila ang in presence of two Witnesses.
han 1e a rod Within the eo lar sai ro formed with a top, a, perforated expansible CLAUDE BY HOSTETLER' 5 tip on the rod, and means for feeding said Witnesses: n
rod in the handle with which the same is A. M. JAoos,
