To all whom tf/nay concern Be it known that'I, Mrs.- EMMA H. Rion- DAN, -a citizen ofthe .United States, and' a resident of South Rutland, in the-county of Jeiferson and State of New York, haveinyvented new and useful Improvements in Vehide-Hubs, of which the following isr a specification. This invention relates to vehicle hubs.

Another object of the invention is to proy vide in a device of the above mentioned character a means whereby longitudinal thrust in either direction 'of the hub with respect to the spindle may beeliminated.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide in a device of the above mentioned character a means lwhereby alubricating substance may be confined to suchelements of the hub as depend upon perfect lubrication to rinsure a mechanism efficiency in the operation of the same. n
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, strong, durable, Aand reliable in operation.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 10 indicates an axle provided with a collar lland the conventional form of spindle indicated by the numeral 12. Upon the spindle-there is rotatably mounted a hub 13 provided with a box- Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the linek ing or bushing 14.` An annular boxing ring formed of any suitable material and indicated by the numeral 15 is carried by the hub 13 and embedded therein adjacent one end of the boxing or bushing 14 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The other end of the hub 13 is provided with a suitable plate 16 securedftherein by any suitable means. This plate is provided with an opening 17 communicating with a recess 18 formed within one end of the hub 13 as shown. This recess 18 is connected with an opening 19 formed within the other end of the hub 13 as shown by means of a passage 20. The passage 20 is adapted to acconnnodate an elongated rod 21, one end of which extends into the opening 19 and is bent at a right-angle thereto to form a handle 22 which projects upwardly through an opening 23 and provided'in an annular band 24 carried upon one end of the hub 13 as'shown. 'A plurality of tongues or lugs 25 preferably formed integral with the band 24 are adapted to project into the opening23 as shown in F ig.'2, forming inconjunction with a. spring member 25 a stopor locking mechanism for the handle 22. This spring member it will be noted is secured to the band 24 within the opening 23 by means of screws 26 or the like. While I have shown the spring member 25 as being secured within the member 23 I wish it understood, however, that the same may be secured upon the `outer periphery of the band 24 if so desired.
Upon the end of the rod 21 carried within therecess 18 there is secured an abutment 27 adapted to engage one end of a coil spring 28 carried by the rod 21 while the other end of the coil spring 28 is adapted to engage a shoulder 29 formed within the recess 18 as shown. Upon the screw-threaded end 30 of the spindle 12 there is disposed a nut 31 provided with an aperture 32 relatively near the periphery thereof, which nut carries an annular boxing ring 33 adapted to engage the face of the plate 16 as shown. Upon ythe opposite face of the nut 31 there is disposed a boxing ring 34 similar to that indicated by the numeral 33, which boxing ring is adapted to engage a protruding portion 35 of a nut 36 having screw-threaded engagement with a flange 37 mounted upon the outer end of thehub 13 and secured thereto by any suitable means.
In use, the operation of the device is as follows: Should it be desired to remove the nut 31 from the screw-threaded end 30 of the spindle l2, the handle 22 is releaesd :from the position shown in Figs. l, 2 and 6, whereupon the end of the rod 2l is moved under the influence of the coil spring 28 into the aperture 32 carried by the nut 3l.
The nut 36 is then removed and the hub T3 is revolved in an anti-clockwise direction, whereupon the nut 31, rotating With the hub 13 is removed from the screw-threaded end 30 of the spindle l2. Upon the removal of the nut 31 it is readily understood that the hub 13 may be readily removed from the spindle l2. When it is desired to screw the nut 3l to the screw-threaded end 30 or the spindle l2 in the position shown in Fig. l the nut 3l is slightly run down upon the screw-threaded ends 8O of the spindle and the end of the rod 21 is moved into the aperture 32, whereupon the hub 18 is rotated in a clockwise direction thereby moving the nut 3l to the position shown in Fig. l. The rod 2l is then moved to the position also shown in Fig. and the nut 36 is screwed into the fiange 37, bringing the protruding portion into engagement ivith the boxing ring 3l whereupon the hub is locked against longitudinal incrementin either direction With respect to the spindle 12.

Having thus described my invention, What l claim as new and desire to secure and pritect by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
In combination an axle provided with a spindle, a hub rotatably mounted upon said spindle, said hub being provided at one end thereof With an opening, an annular band mounted upon one end of said hub and provided therein with an opening7 a plurality of tongues carried by said band and protruding into the second named opening, a spring member carried by said band and arranged Within the second named opening in proximity to said tongues, a plate disposed upon one end of said hub, a nut carried by said spindle and provided therein with an aperture, a boxing ring carried by said nut and adapted to engage said plate, a reciprocatory rod carried by said hub, said rod being bent at one end to forni a handle, said handle. being confined Within the iirst named opening and projected through the opening of said ring and adapted to be retained in position by said spring, and a. coil spring carried by said rod, said coil spring being adapted to normally retain said rod in engagement with the aperture carried by said nut.
