corrrosrrn can END.
Specifieati on of Letters Patent.
Application filed. September 6, 1918. Serial No. 252.823.
Z'i/ :IZZ UILOHI it may concern Be it known that I. KARL M. Hinnn'rox', assignor to (.hicagolllevel and Car Roofing- Company, a corporation of Illinois.) a citizen of the United States. residing in Chicago. in the county of Cool; and State of Illinois. have invented a new and useful Improvement in Composite Car Ends, of which the following is a specification,
My. invention relates to car-end construction, and has t'or an object the provision of a composite end constituted partly of metal paneling and: partly of wood paneling. with such paneling disposed in vertically extending sections and arranged to resist the end thrust of the load in the car and at the same time form a light and economical end structure; and the invention has for further objects such other advantages of structure and function as may he found to obtain in the device hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and which show a preferred form in which the invention may be embodied and exemplified. without being limited to such illustrative embodiment, Figure 1 is an elevation of the outside face of such end structure; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig.1: Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of a modified appiication off the metaliic paneling secured to the end post-s: Fig. 4 is a section on the line .4 of Fig. 3: Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on thaline 55 of Figs. 1 and 2; and Fig. 6 is an enlarged sec tion on the line 6- 6 of Fig. 3. once numerals indicate; like parts in all of the figures.
The middle vertical section of the end structure is constituted of the vertically corrugated metal paneling 10 applied. upon the.
outer face of the end sheathing and having: its side edges bolted to theend posts 11 and havi g its top edge bolted to the end plate and its bottom. edge bolted to the end sill. Between said end posts there are vertical filler-posts 16. each alined with an inwardly projecting: corrugation of the metal paneling and filling the space between the end sheathing .and the inner lining: 15; and the beltrail 17 also occupies said space transverse of the said corrugations. On either side of said end posts 11. and extending from them laterally outward to the corner posts. there is wood paneling 12. forming the lateral vertical sections of the end structure.
Like .rcter- (oi-her strips lS are oolted ov r the side edges ot' the wood paneling and around theacross both the aforesaid wood paneling and metal paneling and bears against the inner faces of the end posts ll and of the corrugations of the said metal paneling.
Such arrangement of end posts. wood structure and metal paneling resists the main strain of the end thrust oi the load in the car; and the laterally disposed sections of the wood paneling suiliciently resist the remainder of such strain and at the same time lighten the end structure and greatly economize the required employmentofnietal members in that structure.
I claim:
1. In a car-end. in combination: metallic plate paneling forming a vertical section of the car end. to resist the'center thrust of the load; and wood paneling forming the. remaining body sections oi the car-end on either side of said metallic section; substantially as specified.
.2. In a car-end. in .comhinatimi: corrugated metallic plate paneling: torming'a vertical section of the car end. to resist the center thrust of the-load; and wood paneling forming the remaining body sections of the car-end on either side of said metallic sec tion; substantially as specified.
3. In a car-end. in combination vertically corrugated metallic plate paneling forming a vertical section of the car end. to resist the center thrust. of the load and wood p aneling forming the remaining body sections of the car-end on either side of said metallic section; substantially as specified.
4. In a car-end. in comhinatim'i: corrugated metal plate paneling forming: a vertical section of th car end. to resist the center thrust of the load: wood parading formin the remaining hotly sections 0? the rarend on either sidof said middle metallic sectionssand an inner wood lining transmitting loai l-thrust strains to the inner ridges of said corrugations.
5. in a car-end. in combination: corner posts and inlorimuliatc (n-bo sts; metallic plat-enuncling forming :1 vertical section 01 the cm: and anal later: lly secured to the said end pcsi's, to resist film center thrust of the 10nd; ZJlll Wand paneling forming the remaining body sections of the air-end on either side or" said metallic section; subsumciaily as specified.
Zn a car-end, in cmnbinntion; cornerpcs'ts and intcrn'icdinic cnil-posfs; corru- 'atcd metallic plate paneling farming a verl ction 01 19 cur owl and laterally sci'iie said cnclqmsiis, i0 resist the Ten- 1 c lmiil; wood paneling Ti OIlJP ning body scviicns of the car end on either side of said middle metallic sci-lion and and-posts; and an inner WOOd lining transmitting load-thrust strains to The inner ridges of the aforesaid corrugw lions of the metallic paneling and against the inner aces of said end-posts; substani'illly as specifiml i testimony whereof hereunto set my 11" iii in the presence of two subscribing Wit-
