Railway cars are frequently cornered in service; that is, some outside object is thrownV against the corner post (or the car is thrown against the outside object) causing a horizontal force to be exerted toward the inside of the car.
Each corner post is also a strut of the over- 55 hanging portion of the side truss ofthe car:
(that is, the portion beyond the body bolster) and as such must act as acolumn or compression member between the side plate and side sill of the car. l
A further object is to associate the vertical marginal portion of the corrugated metallic sheet end wall with a vertically disposed member to form a column comprising angularly disposed arms reinforced by arched ties, which column extends between the roof structure and the underframe'fstructure and functions as a corner post to resist the forces heretofore mentioned, and a further object is to attach the ends of the corrugations (in the end sheet) to the opposite corner posts so as to cause the corrugations to function as restrained, or semi-restrained beams,
thus materially increasing their strength.

'I'he drawing shows the usual parts of the car, such as the roof structure l (including the side plates 2; end plates 3 and roof proper '4 and other associated elements); the underframe structure 8 (including the side sill 1; end sill 8; -center sill and other associated elements); side wall sheet in; side lining il; side lining nailing strip i2 and end lining ifs.

The end wall sheet 2l is iormed with a plurality of substantially parallel horizontally disposed corrugations or embossments 20 which traverse the end wall sheet 2l between the opposite corner posts o! the car which corrugations or emboments extend around the corner of the cartotheedge 2l oftheilange 22. The endwall sheet 2l is preferably formed with other horizontal corrugations 21 between the corrugations 2l which spring from the body of the end wall sheet (at 2l) and extend around the corner of the car and merge into the ange 22 (at 29) of the end wall sheet 2l.

The side wal sheet il is preferably in thgsame .plane as the outer portions of the corrugations 26-21 in the iiange 22 to provide a iiush side wall. Ihe end wall sheet iiange 22 preferably overlaps the connecting piece 38 to provide a shingle construction and to facilitate removal of the end wall sheet independently of the connectingpiece.
This application is assigned to Standard Railway Equipment Manufacturing Company, acorporation of' Delaware, and Mr. Gilpins one-half' undivided right, title and interest in Jumperrand-n Gilpin application No. 194,360, iiled March '1, 1938, is also assigned to said Standard Railway Equipment Manufacturing Company, therefore, under Rule 43 reference is made herein to the factthatcertainstructuresaredisclosedinthis application which are disclosed and claimed in the aforesaid Jumper and Gilpin application.
The accompanyinrdrawing illustrates the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof, within the scope of the claims, will oecurtopersonsskilledintheart.
I claim:
l. In a railway car having a roof structure, an 'underfraxne structure and a side wall sheet in combination with a vertical member secured to the rooi' structure and underframe structure, respectively, and comprising angularlv disposed arms, an end wall sheet secured to one arm ci said member and provided with a flange secured to the other arm of said member, said end wall sheet formed with a plurality of horizontal corrugations which traverse the end wall sheet and extend to the edge o! the flange whereby said corrugations function as arched ties between said arms to prevent deileetion thereoi'. and a connecting piece having aV ilat vertical marginal part secured to said side wall sheet, and a corrugated vertical marginal part registering with the corrugations in the end wall sheet and secured thereto.
2. A structure as deiined in claim `1 wherein the side wall'sheet is substantially in the same plane asthe outer portions of the corrugations in said end wall sheet flange.
