Description
J. W. BURTUN.
SPARK PLUG TESTER.
APPucATloN man SEPT. 3o. 191e.
arrow/1914 UNiTED STATES PATENT carica.
J AMES WILLIAM BURTON, 0F WELCH, WEST VIRGINIA.
SPARK-PLUG TESTER.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES WILLIAM BUR- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Welch, in the county of McDowell and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark- Plug Testers, of which the following is a specification. l
The present invention relates to electrical testing devices and has particular reference to a new and useful improvement in spark plug testers.
An object of my invention is to provide a simple and easily adjusted testing device for use in determining, without removal, whether a `spark plug is delivering a proper spark or not.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be applied to any of the standard spark plugs now in use without removing the spark plug or making any changes in the ignition system of an internal combustion engine. Y i
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be cheaply manufactured, quickly and easily applied for use, is eective in operation and conveniently adjustable.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved spark plug tester will appear from the following detailed description and theclaini, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sparkA plug tester embodying the improvements of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same in operative position.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 10 designates `the body of my improved testing device,
the same preferably being formed of insulating material, such as wood, hard rubber or the like.
The body 10 carries a terminal in the form of a bolt 11 having a knurled connecting nut 12 for contact with the top surface of an internal combustion engine cylinder. The
` opposite end -of the bolt is providediwith a spherical head 13 having a sparking point 14 carried Ithereby. Anl/adjustable spark- Specification of Letters Patent. Patentgd Mar, 11, 1919, Application filed September 30, 1916. Serial No. 123,142.
ing terminal is provided in the form of a rod 15 having one end thereof in proximity to the end of the sparking terminal 14, said rod 15 being threaded as at 16 for adjustment in a bracket 17, said bracket being secured to the body l0 by means of a bolt.
, A springarm 19 is retained in connection with the bolt by means of the nut 20, the
free end of said spring arm 1 being bifur- 28 formed of hard rubber or other insulating material. i
In use the nut 12 is engaged with the top surface of the engine cylinder 26 and,the arm 19 is engaged with the binding post of the spark plug. By adjusting the rod 15 to the proper gap the user may readily determine whether the spark plug in question is operating efliciently. I desire to lay particular stress upon the extreme simplicity of my improved spark plug tester. In View of the simplicity of the device and its obvious advantages a further enlargement of the description is unnecessary.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and` comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had,V and while I have shown vand described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :-v
A spark plu tester including a at base formed of insu ating material, a stationary terminal on one end thereof, brackets immovably mounted on the base, one of said brackets being formed with a screw threaded bore, an adjustable terminal comprising a rod having a screw threaded portion rotatably supportedtby said bracket, the screw y d more (me yhe nase and a cuvecl spring urcated free end secured to mneced to' the adgustable l0
