Description

L. A. EASTMAN.
1m BURNER. I IWFLICATION FILED SEPT-26. I918 mama Mar. 11,1919.
proceeds,
LEl/VIS A. EASTMAN, 0F LACONIA, NEW HAMIP SHIRE.
GIL-BURNER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, LEWIS A. EASTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laconia in the county of Belknap and State of New llampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
. This invention relates to hydro-carbon burners, and more particularly to those designed for use in connection with fire boxes of heating and cooking stoves.
The ob e'ct of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, cheap and efiicient burner of this character, which while producing a maximum amount of heat consumes a minimum quantity of fuel.
Another object is to provide a burner of this character with means for directing the heat to any desired point.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, which will appear as the description the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed ma 1 he made within the scope of what is claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
n the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a burner constructed in accordance with this inv entien, and
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
In the embodiment illustrated a base plate 1 is shown, which may be of any suitable or desired configuration, being rectangular as illustrated, and provided on its lower face with an oil chamber 2. This plate is mounted on supporting wheels 3 and has rising from the Oil chamber 2 a pipe 4 which may be of any desired height. A U-shaped burner pipe 5 has one leg connected with the upper end of pipe 4: and extending laterally and forwardly therefrom with its other leg arranged below it and in vertical alinement therewith. The lower leg 7 has burner nip-, pics 8, any desired number of which. may be employed, two being here shown, and the free end of said leg is closed by any suitable means. The upper leg 9 carries heat defiectors 10 which are adjustable on said leg to provide for the directing of the flames from the nipples 8 in the desired direction.- These deflectors 10 are arranged above the nipples -8 through which the flame passes and Specification of Letters Patent.
Application flied September 26, 1918. Serial No. 255,838.
is directed against the deflectors in the man ner above set forth.
An oil supply tank '11 of any desired size is adapted to be suspended on a suitable support in a plane above the burner proper, and is provided with an outlet having a cook 12 which is connected by a coupling 13 with a pipe 14. This pipe 14 may be of any desired len 'th, and is preferably flexible to permit it to e inserted between the grate bars of a furnace or stove. This pipe 14 is connected by a coupling 15 with an uprightpipe 16 equipped with a valve 17 for controlling the pp y 16 is united with the chamber 2 by a suitable coupling 18 and is designed to supply oil to the burner proper.
As shown, the tank 11 has brackets 19 carried by its lower end and a hanger 20 for engagement with a nail to assist in supporting the tank in upright position.
In the use of this burner, the base 1 is placed within a stove fire box with the wheels 3 resting on the bottom thereof, and the pipes 14 and 16 extending between thegrate bars, the tank 11 beingsuspended from any suitable and convenient support. When in this position, the tank 11 having been first filled with kerosene, the cook 12 is opened to permit the passage of fuel through pipes 14 and 16 to the chamber 2. Thefuel in chamber 2 rises through pipe '14 and passes into the-le s 7 and 9 of the burner proper. The
supply of fuel to the chamber 2 may be controlled by the valve 7.
To start the fire or light the burner, a
little oil is permitted to flow out through both nipples 8 on to a piece of asbestos, not
shown, which is placed on the base 1. The
oil-soaked asbestos is then ignited which will cause the flame to rise and encompass leg of the burner thereby vaporizing the fuel container therein which .will ignite at the exit of nipples 8 and shoot upward against .100
the spreaders 10, being distributed thereb and flared outwardly forming a large vol ume of heat producing flame.
A stopper 6 is designed to be inserted in one or the other of the burner nipples 8 after sufiicient heat has been generated, so that a uniform heat may be maintained indefinitely.
As shown, the stopper 6 is in the form of an,
S-shaped piece of wire having'a weight 6 on one end and its other end adapted to fit closely within one of the nipples and operate as a closure therefor,-
of fuel through pipe 16. This pipe 70' This burner, with both flames in operation will heat an oven in about twenty minutes, more orless, and if it is desired to direct all of the heat into the oven," the spreaders 10 are tilted toward the oven causing the flame to be directed thereag'ainstr Likewise, the flame may be directed in any other direction by the adjustment of these Spreaders.
It is to be controlled by regulation of valve 17.
While this burner is described for use in connection with a cooking stove, it is obvious that it may be used equally well in the fire box of a heating stove or furnace.
From the foregoing description, taken connection with t e accompanying drawings, the advantages of, the constructlon and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment Letters Patent, is be understood'that the'fiame will with each other, means for connecti pipes with said chambennipples carried by,
thereof, I desire to havefit understood that Having thus fully described my invention, I
what I claim as new A burner of the class ing awheel-su ported base plate having a chamber on its ower face, fuel supply means and desire to secure by r 80, described comprisconnected with said chamber, a valve for controlling said supply, parallel pipes arranged above said plate in vertical aiinement the lower pipe, and a stopper for clo'sing'one of said nipples. f 4
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two "witnesses. I LEWIS A, EASTMAN. Witnesses:
