Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. ifl, 1919.
Application filed December 6, 1918. Serial No. 285,832.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY ALPHoNsn VVIDMER, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 32 to 34: (llerkenwell road, London, E. (L, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Relating to -Fountain-Pens andthe like, of which the following is a specification. i The present invention relates to improvements in the fountain pen or other writing instrument in which a blotting attachment is combined with the pen or the like in such a manner that it can be slid'into the interior of the cap of the pen when out of use and easily ejected from said cap when required. In the preferred arrangement the blotting attachment formed an independent unit and therefore had the disadvantage in practice that it was sometimes mislaid and not at hand when required.
According to the present invention a fountain pen is provided with a blotting attachment of the type described in which the cap provided with an opening adapted to be closed by a rotating shutter through which opening the blotter is adapted to project; the movement of the shutter on or ofi the opening being such that it is adapted to force said blotter into the cap against the influence of its spring or to release said attachment and allow it to take up a position projecting throu h said opening.
My invention is ilustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a sectional View of the pen with the shutter in position over the opening in the cap.
Fig. 2 shows a sectional view with the shutter in the ofigposition and the blotter pro'ecting through the opening.
. ig. 3 shows a detail view of the opening in the cap.
gig. 4 shows a detail view of the blotter,
an Fig. 5 shows a detail view of the shutter.
Referring now to the drawings: 1 indicates the pen, 2 indicates the cap provided with deep bearings 3 adapted to receive the ends of thespindle 4 on which is mounted the blotter glindicates the s ring tendingtoprojectt e otter thro the opening 7 as shown in 2.
.voirs comprisin cap is provided with a rotatable shutter 8 shown in detailin Fig. 5. This shutter is adapted to be turned so as to cover the opening and to compress the blotter into the .cap against the influence of its spring 6 or turned to a position in which it is off the opening and consequently releases the blotter and allows it to project through said opening 7 as shown in Fig. 2.
The blotting attachment of my invention is arranged so that it can be easily die mantled and renewed when desired. The cap is provided with a screw-on end piece 10' shown in Figs. 1 and 2. VVhen'this end drawn over the .end of the cap, thereby opening the bearings 3 and. allowing the blotter to be lifted with its spindle out of. said bearings. f What I claim is :-v 1. A blotting attachment. for fountain piece is removed the shutter can be withpens and other instruments with ink resers voirs comprisin a pen, a cap for said pen a blotting attac ment mounted within sai cap and adapted to register with an opening in said cap, a spring adapted to project said blotting attachment through said opening and a rotatable shutter adapted to be .moved ofi said opening to allow the attachment to project therethrough or to be moved over said opening to compress said attachment into the cap against-the infinance of its spring.
2. A blotting attachment for fountain:
pens and other instruments with ink rwer voirs comprising a pen, 2. ca for said pen, hearings in said cap, a spin le mounted in said bearings a blotting attachmentcarried by said spindle and adapted to te with an opening in said cap, a spring a pted to project said blotting attachment throu h said opening and a rotatable shutter a apted to be moved ofi said opening to allow the attachment to project therethrough or to be moved over said opening to compress said attachment into the cap against the influence of its spring.
3. A blotting attachment for fountain pens and other instruments with ink resera pen, 2. ca for said en, bearings 1n sai cap, a spin 1e mount in said bearings, a blotting attachment carried by said spindle and adapted to register with an opening in said cap, a spring adapted to project said blotting "attachment -t'hrough shutter adapted-to retain the spindle of the said, opening, "a rotatable shutter adapted to blotting attachment in position in its bearbe inoved off said opening to allow the atings and a screw-0n end piece adated to 10 talchmeiit-toprojcct therethrough or to be retain said shutter in. position on t e cap.
5 moved-over said 0 ening to compress said In testimony whereof I sign my name to attachment -into t e cap against the inthis specification. fluenceiof its spring, end pieces on said HARRY ALPHONSE WIDMEB.
