To all whom t may concern: Y
Be it known that 1, Wnmrair Knnnrnss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, haveV invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a fulhclear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in locks and has particular reference to a window fastener. Y
An object of the invention is to provide an improved window fastener designed to lock either the upper or lower or both sashes of a window in partially opened position and prevent further opening thereof by unauthorized persons.
Another object is to provide a lock of this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture, readily applicable to a windqw and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions one of which, for'the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of showing the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of the adjustable locking member.
The window to which the fastener is applied may be of any desired construction and in the accompanying drawing the same is shown as consisting of a windowV frame 10 in which are slidably mounted the upper and lower sashes 11 and 12,V respectively, the same being shown locked in partially opened positions.
Preferably mounted upon the upper rail of the lower sash 12 andV adjacent one verf tical edge thereof is a lock casing 13 of rectangular formation secured to the railby' means Yof suitable fasteners 14 and having extending Vcentrally therethrough an opening 15 provided with a communicating groove 16 awindow which extends the length of said opening. In the top of the casing 13 the same is provided with recesses 17 disposed transversely with respect to the opening 15 and intersecting the same.
The upper sash 11 has secured to the side rail thereof adjacent the lock casing 13 a locking strip 18 a portion of which is embedded in the side rail and secured thereto by means of suitable fasteners such as screws 19 and the other portion of said strip extends inwardly and is provided with a row Yof vertically alined openings 20.
The y locking member 21 is adjustably mounted in the lock casing 13 and preferably includes a bolt 22 slidably mounted in the opening 15 in said casing and provided upon its free end with a squared portion 23 adapted to engage in any one of the openings 20 when the locking member is in its operative position. The bolt 22 carries a. pair of locking lugs 24 intermediate the ends thereof which are engageable in the groove 16 and which have associated therewith a pair of Vtumblers 25 mounted for rotation within the recesses 17 of the lock casing and having openings 26 through which the bolt 22 extends and said openings 26 are formed with notches 27 which are adapted to be alined with the lugs 24 by rotating the tumblers-in order that the locking bolt may be adjusted from its locking to the inoperative or releasing position thereof. By this construction there is provided a permutation lock which will effectively prevent the withdrawal of the locking bolt by persons not familiar with the combination and by reason thereof it will be obvious that the sashes 11 and 12 will be locked together when in partially opened positions.
In order that the sashes 11 and 12 may be locked to the window frame and prevented from movement relative thereto there is preferably provided a second locking strip 28 secured to the vertical stile of the Vwindow frame longitudinally thereof and said strip is provided in one of'its vertical edges with a plurality of Vslots or notches 29 which are adapted to receive the locking arms 30 of the member 21 when the latter is in its locking position so that any vertical movement ofthe window sashes with respect to the framefwill be revented. The locking arms 80 are'prefera ly arranged'in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other the locking strip 28 so that the locking ofthe sashes with respect to each other and to the window frame will be simultaneouslyV effected.
What is claimed is: Y Y l. The combination Vwith a window vframe and upper and lower sashes slidable therein, of a locking strip secured to one of the vertical stiles of the frame and having a plurality of notches therein, a second lock-V ing strip secured to one of the sashes and having a plurality of openings therein, a lock casing carried by the other sash, a bolt slidable with respect to the casing and engageable inany one of the openings in the second strip, arms connected with the bolt and engageable in the notches of the iirst named locking Strip when the bolt is engaged in an opening in the second locking strip, lugs carried by the bolt and tumblers revolubly engaged with the bolt and having notches, said tumblers being movable lto bring their notches into and out of position for the passage of the lugs of the bolt therethrough.
2. The combination with 'a window frame and upper and lower sashes slidable therein, of a locking strip carried by one Aofthe vertical Stiles of the frame, and provided with a vertical series of notches, a second locking strip carried by one of the sashes and provided with a vertical series-of openings, a
lock casing carried by the other sash, a locking member slidably mounted in the casing, said locking member including a bolt engageable in any one ofthe openings of the second strip, and including also arms engageable in the notches ofthe first strip when the bolt is engaged in an opening in the second strip, lugs carried by the bolt and tiunblers mounted in the casing and movable into and out of position to interrupt'movement of the lugs and therewith the locking member, to lock said member in'either of its positions. Y
3. The combination with a window frame and upperand lower sashes slidable therein,
of a locking strip secured to one of the vertical stiles of said window frame and having a plurality of notches therein, a second locking strip secured to one of said sashesV and having a plurality o1c openings therein, a lock casing carried by the other sash, a locking member adjustable in said casing and including' a pair of arms engageable in the notches of the first named locking strip when the locking member is in its operative position, a bolt also forming a part of said locking member and having one end'engageable in any one of the openings in the second named locking strip when the locking member is in its locking position, and a permutation device associated with said bolt Vfor maintaining the locking member in its operative position. I Y Y Y Y In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. A
