Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 7, 1918. Serial No. 257,252.
To all whom it may concern:

, This invention relates to improvements in vibrators, and the objects of the invention are to provide an effective device constructed of few parts in which the element of noise will be practically eliminated and by which a requisite amount of vibration may be efficiently transmitted to the person or patient to which it is to be applied.
Further improvement consists in the elimination of revolving parts and bearings of any kind. andthe consequent use of oils and lubricants, thus prolonging the effective life of the instrument.
Further objects are to generally improve and simplif the construction of the device and to enab e it to better perform the function required of it.'
It consists essentially of the improved construction hereinafter described in detail in the accompanying specification and drawings.

In the drawings, like characters of refer ence indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a metallic casing of suitable shape to contain the working parts and formed with a removable cover 10, normally held in position by means of screws 11 and 12 extending through the cover into suitable threaded recesses provided in the casing.
B. represents a laminated core of soft iron forming a double horse shoe around the central arm 13 on which an electromagnet C is wound, the conducting wires for the electromagnet extending through a suitable perforation or opening 14in the casing.
E represents the vibrating element comprising a pole piece 15 located immediately in front of the arm '13 of the electromagnet C and normally supported in position and spaced a short distance from the surface of the core by means of a spring supporting member 16 of U-shape, having its sides adjustably secured to the outer surface of the arms 17 and 18 of the core B by means of screws 19 and 20 extending through slots 21 and 22 into the core.'
A short sleeve or rod 25 is connected to the pole piece by a suitable screw 26 and formed in the outer end with a threaded socket 27 adapted to receive a screw threaded end 28 on the contact element F, which may if desired be formed with a resilient face of rubber or the like, that illustrated being of a well known type. The sleeve or rod 25 as will'be seen extends through a perforation or opening 31 in the cover 10.
In using the device the elcctromagnet is connected to a source of alternating current which will cause the pole piece to be automatically contracted and repelled, the latter being supported on the spring member 16 will produce a sufficient, yet noiseless vibration.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above specification and accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In combination, a vibrating element including a laminated horse shoe magnet, a
leaf spring of substantially inverted U-shape having its extremities secured to the outer surface of the arms on the horse shoe magnet, a contact element supported by the leaf spring and electrical means for affecting the vibrating action substantially as described.
2. The device as claimed in claim 1- in which the leaf spring is adjustably secured by screws 19 and 20-extending through slots '21 and 22 into the core of the magnet.
'3. The arrangement according to claim 1 in whicha pole piece 15 is provided between the leaf spring and the core of the magnet in combination with a connecting screw 26 extending through the pole piece and connecting it with the contact element.
