ELETRIC-LIGHTeBATI-I APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ov. 30, 1915.
Application led .Tune 9, 1915. I' Serial No. 33,058.
To all ywhom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, BERNHARD VVIENEina subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of the 'city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented cei'tain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Light-Bath Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electric therapeutic apparatus and more specifically to electric light bath apparatus.
The object of my invention is the'production of a device of the character mentioned which will be of durable and economical constriiction, one which may be readily and easily. controlled and applied, and one in which will be providedsimple and efficient means for etfectually guarding the electric 'lights employed in conjunction with the device. i
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combinations scribed and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the .accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which, 1
Figure l is a perspective view of an electric light'bath apparatus embodying the in-' vention showing the method of employment of the same'` Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the interior of thedevice, and Fig. 3 is a sec` tion'taken on line c a of Fig. 2.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a frame l formed of a single piece of sheet aluminum which is curved linto substantially semi-circular form td adapt the saine to artially encircle a portion of thel body of tA e user. As illustrated in the drawing said frame is ofa size adapting the same to partially' encircle the central or trunkportion of the body of Vthe user, but if desired said frame may be of a lesser size so as to adapt the same for encircling one of the limbs. in other words said frame may be constructed of any size which-will best adapt the same for use in.`
connection with the portion of the body in conjunction with which it is desired to employ the device.
Mounted upon the inner side of frame 1 midway the upper and lower edges thereof is a series of spaced electric light supporting sockets 2, each of said-sockets being adapted' to accommodate two electric lights 3 which parts hereinafter de-I` `Fig. 3.
socket members 9. for controlling the current passing through the lights. Said rheostat is provided with a pivoted handle 6 which controls the resistance oifered-by the rh'eostat thereby controlling the streng-th of the cui which is electrically connected with the` rent passing through the lights and hence the intensity of the light vand heat.v of the electric lights. The frame l is formed at its -upper and lower edges with beads 7 and at flanges S for reinforcement.
Provided ati-the inner side of frameil for coperation with the electric lights is a guard consisting of two flexible cords 9 arranged adjacent the upper and lower ends of its vertical edges with inward'lv extending frame l at the inner side thereof. The ends of each cord are secured at 10 to the frame l adjacent the'ends'f of the latter so that the central portion of,` the cord is slack." Cooperating with theacentral portion ofveach cord is a p'air of helical tension springs 1l which connect the .same with the adjacent portion of the frame 1 as clearly shown in Vith this arrangement it will be seen that each of the guard ropes will be drawn taut and yieldingly held in a position disposed slightly inwardly from the lights in order to serve as a guard against breakv age of the lights and also as aguard foi the user to'prevent burning 'through Contact 'with the lightswhen the deviceis in use.
The yieldability of the guard ropes permits of the same conforming with the shape of the body thus conducingto ease and comfort in the employment of the device;
The device is used for the application of -light and heat to the diseased or injured portions of the" body of the user such as around joints, or the limbs, along the spine or any other part of the body. The device is especially advantageous in the treatment of lumbago. rheumatism, skindiseases, stiff joints, neuritis, gout trouble, etc. n ,Yilhile I have illustrated and described the lref'eired form of construction for carrying my lnvention into effect, this is capable-,of
precise 'details of construction set forth,- but the corresponding `variation and modification without departso that the central portion of said element is,
I, slack ;V and helical tension springs connecting from the spirit of the invention. therefore7 do not wish to be limited to the ing said central portion of said element with portion of said frame for desire to avail myself ofsuch variations and yieldingly holding the same drawn taut in modifications as come within the scope of a position inwardly of said lights, substanthe appended. claims. tially as described. 4
Having described my inigention what I claim as new and desire -to secure by Letters combination of a frame formed to adapt Patent is the same to partially encircle a portion of l. In a device of the class described, the the body ofthe user; electric lights mounted combination of a frame formed to adapt the on the inner side of said frame; a guard at same to extend around a portion of the body the inner side of said frame for cooperation vof the user; electric lights vmounted on the with said lights, said guard comprising inside of said frame; and a yieldableguard elongated flexible elements arranged at the at the inner side of said frame for coperainner sides of said Aframe above and below tion with said lights,"substantially as described. i ends secured to said frame adjacent the ends 2. In a device of the class describeld, the thereof so that the central portion of said combination of a frame formed to adapt the element is slack; .and resilient means engage Il. In a device of .the class described, the
said lights, each of said elements havingsame to partially encircle a portion of the ing with said central portion of said Aelement Y body of the user; electric lights mounted on l for yieldingly holding the same drawn taut the inner side of said frame; a guard at the in a position slightly inwardly of said lights,`
' yieldingly holding the'same dra-Wn taut in a thereof; and a pair of electric lights mount-V innerside of said frame forcoperation with substantially as described. said lights, said guard comprising an elongatedv flexible element having its ends secombination of a frame formed to adapt the cured to said body adjacent the ends thereof same to partially ,encircle a portion of the so that the central portion o f said element is body of the user; electric light socketsslack; and resilien `means engaging with mounted on the inner side of said frame subsaid central port1e-`ofsa1d element for stantially midway. the upper and lower edges position inwardlyofsaid lights, substan ed in each of said sockets one of which extially as described. \-tends upwardly and the other downwardly 3. In a device of the class described, the therefrom, substantially as described. combination of a frame formed to adapt the In testimony whereof I have signed my same to partially encircle aportion of the name to this specication in the presence of blody of the duserc electfric lights mouited on f two subscribing witnesses. tie inner si e oi sai rame; av Ouar at the inner sidejof said frame for coperati on withA BERNHARD TIENER' said lights, said guard comprising an'elongated flexible element having its ends securedv to saidframe adjacent the end"J thereof llVitnesses:
