COMBINED SCISSORS AND SQUARE.
Specification of Letters Patent. P i cnflnl 1.31;, 1 i i {H 9 Application filed March 15, 1918. Serial No. 222,621.
Be it known that I, Znioui G. HAYDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eldora, in the county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have. invented certain new .and useful Improvements in Combined Scissors and Squares; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in scissors, shears, snip'pers and the like, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved pair of scissors and the like so formed that the same can be readily used as compasses, a square, trysquare, and rule.
Another object of the invention is the .having the edges of the blades thereof graduated, a hollow rivet pivotally securing the blades together, the blades having a plnrality of registering apertures spaced at equidistant points therein, the hollow rivet being arranged to receive a pointed instrument to engage the Work to be marked, and form a pivot, and the registering apertures in the blades being arrangedto receive a-scriber or marking point for scribing ares, circles and the like.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a pair of scissors or the like having an auxiliary blade pivoted thereto, for various purposes, will be readily apparentas the description of the application proceeds. i
A still further object oi the invention is.
to provide an improved device of the above character which is durable and efficient in use, one that is simple and easy, to manufacture, and one that can be pl aegw upon the market at a reasonableosh I With these and othegfoilajfiets its view the invention consists in the novel construction,
arrangement and formation of parts, as will be'hereinai'ter more specificaliy described,
claimed, and illustrated in the accon1pany-- ing drawing,
termin a )art thereof. in I b i \vlnch:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved scissors showing the, blades in open position and being adapted to be used as a; square;
F ig. 2 is an edge elevation of'the improved tool; i
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through the pivot on the line 3-4-3 of Fig.
2 showing the pointed instrument inse 'ed through the hollow rivetito form a pivot for the scissors, when the same is to be used as compasses; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 4-4- of Fig. 2 showing the marking.
point in position in the registering aperthree, ivhen the same is to be used as com-Q passes.
Referring to the drawing in detail, where in similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 gencrz'illy indicates the improved tool. including a. pair of blades 2 and 3 pivoted together by means of a hollow rivet 4 having its ends upset as at 5 to firmly clamp the same in position. Each blade is provided with an operatinghandle ('3 and one handle is suitably shaped for re cciving the thunib of the operator and the other handle is suitably shaped for receiviug the fingers of the operator. One of the ment of the blades in relation to each other and an outward extension 8 is formed on the same and the outer edge of the extension liesparallel with the cutting edge ofone of the blades. The blades 2 3 are rovided with inner cutting edges 9. 0th edges of the blades are provided with suitable graduations 10, so that the blades can be readily "used as a rule when sodesired.
'90 handles is provided with the ordinary shoulder stop 7 for limiting the closing move- The cxten on .8 is provided with a longitudinallyiextending threaded bore 11, which receives tn adjustable thumb-screw 12 having its upper end knurled as at 13 to provide a hand grip. The lower end of the, screw is adapted to engage the oppositefblade 2.-
to limit the opening movement thereof, for
I a purpose which will hereinafter more fully appear. -The blade 3 is provided adjacent to the extensionB and limiting shoulder 7 with suitable gvaduutions 1% formingn protractor for sl'lo'wing the difi'erent angles in nj ci rnle, and the'blaide 2 nptod to be 5 settotho desired angle and the) sot-screw lljis then turned so as to bring the same i into engagement with the blade and the handles lot the blades are so operated so of the i blades 2 and 3. he re? jlhp hind nioprovided W at nqui distantly i I dnpted to registor. with each nd whenit is lesirod'to use the ompasss, a -smtahlo pointed 1n- Siill'illtllll lfi iS inserted in thohollow rivet;
