Each of these slots is indexed with its corresponding gage number marked upon the upper surface of the body 10, the portion of said body between said longitudinal edges 19 and 23 being drilled with holes 24 corresponding to standard twist drill and steel wire gage sizes, and each of these holes is indexed with its corresponding gage number. The tapered end of the body is provided with an inclined edge 25 connecting the shorter longitudinal edge 23 with the extremity edge 12, and said inclined edge is beveled to correspond with the bevel on edge 12, and said beveled surface being marked with two inch units divided into 32nds and 64ths respectively. This marking on a beveled surface will enable a very close measurement to be taken and the beveled edge may also be used as an envelop opener.
The pocket clip 26 is pivotally mounted adjacent one end by a rivet 27 in an approximately central position on the upper surface 0f the body. The .extremity of said pivoted end is provided with two beveled indicator points 28, which through correspondence with angle marks 29 will give a reading of the angle at which said clip or arm 26 is set from 0 degrees to 90 degrees, both clockwise and counterclockwise from a position at right a les to edge 19. The extremity of the free en of said clip has a turned-up portion 30 to facilitate the entry of the clip overthe edge of a pocket. The under side of this clip is provided with a nail file consisting of two slightly beveled file surfaces 31 and 32, the former being a fine file surface, the latter a rough le surface. When not in use the clip 26 is folded over onto the body 10, and portion 30 just clears lens holder 13 and serves as a guard for the lens.
The reverse side 33 of the body 10 is also utilized, the portion adjacent t0 edge 19 being marked with a decimal scale 34, having decimal subdivisions of inches from 10ths to 60ths inclusive. The portion adjacent the beveled edge 25 is provided with a metric scale 35 of millimeters and centimeters.
The uses to which a combination tool of this character may be placed are too numerous to be recited here. The turned-up portion 30 of the arm 26 not only facilitates the introduction of the pocket edge beneath said arm or clip but it provides a handle by which the clip or arm may be readily swung laterall from the body7 as Well as serving as a de'ecting guard for the magnifying lens, and when the arm is in its folded position it covers and houses the drill gage openings. In grinding'twist drills the angle made by the cuttingedge and the drill axis may be checked by placing the edge 19 along the side of the drill and adjusting the protractor arm 26 so that its edge coincides with the cutting edge of the drill. When the tool is arranged in the pocket the roughened under face of the clip or arm 26 secures the tool firmly against accidental dislodgment, and while the filing surfaces 31 and 32 have been designated as being preferably for nail use, obviously they can be made of such character as to be used for filing meta-l of various descriptions. The extremity 12 provides a neat tack-lifting device especially designed for draftsmans use.
It is understood that the standards and units of measurement and gages shown on this invention may be substituted for by other standards and units to suit other engineering or geographic conditions without altering the spirit of the invention.
I claim A combination tool or drafting instrument comprising a strip-like body having protractor markings thereon and having` an opening therein, a lens arranged in said opening, and a pocket clip pivoted at one end to the body for swinging laterally to be used in co operation with said body and markings thereon as a protractor arm and having its free end extending outwardly adjacent the lens to protect the same and facilitate introduction of the pocket edge beneath the clip.
