IMPROVEMENT IN VENQI'ILATING SKY-LIGHTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,658, dated July 23, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. GEDDES, of the city of Y Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Ventilating Sky-Lights, of which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare that the same is a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had' to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to a sky-light adapted to be placed in either a vertical or horizontal position, and which may be constructed of galvanized sheet-iron, zinc, or any other suitable material, having for its object the ventilating as well as the lighting of the apartment or stairway over which it is placed.
In the further description of my invention which follows, due reference must be had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of the sky-light. Fig. 2 is the top view of the same with the sash-frame and lights removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional View, showing gaskets, guards, and mode of attachment.
A is the inside lining of the sky-light, surrounded by the air-chamber B. O is the hollow bar running completely around the inside of the lining A. C' is a cross-bar connecting with the bar C at its ends, forming a continuous opening for the circulation of air. D D are gutters for the conveying of leakage-water, placed on the tops of the hollow bars C and C, forming a water-tight joint where they con- On one side of the sky-light the gutter is enlarged, forming the trough E, which is provided with outlet-pipes H for the carrying olf of the leakage-water. G G are glass plates resting upon the edges of the gutters D D and packed by gaskets gg of India rubber, cotton,wool, or other ilexible substance. These gaskets are held by strips g', soldered to the gutters D D. I is a cap resting upon the glass plates Gr G, as also upon the bars J J, and packed in the same manne as the glass plates. The cap is held down by bolts and nuts 7c 7c, the bolts being screwed into the pieces k', soldered across the gutters D D. lIhe glass plates are prevented from sliding by hooks I, screwed into the projections S on the side of the gutter D. L L are registers, arranged to be operated from below by a suitable rod or cord, and are designed to Vregulate the ventilation. M is a weatherstrip running around the entire sky-light to prevent snow or rain from being driven into the airchamber B. As an additional precaution against leakage, conducting-strips T are fastened to the under side of the cap I to guide any water that might enter between the cap I and the glass G iutothe gutters D D. The air passes from the room below through the openings N and the registers L into the chamber B, and thence through the apertures O.
The merits to be found in my invention are the following: Under no circumstances can water or snow leak into the building, although ample provision is made for a perfect circulation of air, as well as for purposes of the lighting of the apartment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The air-chamber B, in combination with the hollow bars C and C and the openings N N and O O, together with the registers L L, as arranged substantially in the manner set forth, for the purposes specified.
2. The gaskets g, inclosed or guarded by the strips gf, in combination with the adjustable cap or sash-frame I, having the conductingstrip T, and held down by the bolts 7c and nuts k and pieces k, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
