KRAFT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Safety Catch for Brooches, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to catches for brooches and similar articles in which a pin is engaged with a hook or clasp at the back of the brooch to maintain the latter in the adjusted position.
The general object of the invention is to provide an improved catch by which the pin will be positively locked in the fastened position through the medium of a manually operated lever latch associated with the catch forming a closure for the latter after the entrance of the pin therein.
More specific objects of the invention are to provide a lever latch having a positive interlock with the catch and so formed as to limit its swinging movement after reaching the fastened position.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a brooch equipped with my improved safety catch, parts being broken out, the view showing the latch in the open position;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side view partly in section showing the lever latch in the fastened position;
Fig. 3 is a front end view of the brooch and safety catch;
Fig. 4 is a front view of the latch in a slightly modified form.
In the illustrated example the numeral 10 indicates a brooch, and 11 the usual pin ranging longitudinally at the back and having a transverse pivot pin 12 securing the pin to lugs 18 on the brooch near one end.
On the back of the brooch 10 near the opposite end from the pivot of the pin 11 is arranged means for fastening the free end of the pin, said means comprising a catch 14 in general similar to catches ordinarily provided on brooches and the like to receive the pin. In accordance with my invention the hooked end 15 of the catch 14 has its terminal end formed with a notch or depression 16. Associated with the catch 14 I Specification of Letters Patent.

is a lever latch 17 secured by atransverse pivot 18 passing through the shank ofthe catch'14 and through a lug 19 as well as through the latch 17 which is disposed between the base or shank of the catch 14 and said lug. Said latch 17 at its pivoted end swings in a plane within the end of the hook 15, the end of said latch being offset at an incline to be disposed obliquely and lie across the front of the hook 15 forming a closure of the latter after the entrance of the pin 11. The latch 17 may have a suitable head 20 for convenient grasping and swinging of the latch on its pivot 18.
With the described arrangement the lever latch may be swung to the open position indicated in Fig. 4 leaving the catch 14 open for the entrance and removal of the pin 11 and after entrance of said pin within the hook 15 of the catch the lever latch 17 is swung to the fastening position across the open end of the hook as seen in Figs. 2 and 3. The path of movement of the latch 17' is such that it will be required to be sprung into the notch 16. of the catch to thereby firmly be held in engagement with the catch and require a positlve swinging of the latch to the open position for the release of the pin 11.
The bottom surface of the latch 17 is squared as at 21 to lie against the opposed back surface at the base of the latch when the latter is in the fastened position, thereby limiting the swinging movement of the latch through an angle to bring it into the notch 16. With the latch in the fastened position the accidental release of the pin 11 is made impossible and the relation of my improved latch to the hooked catch is such that in the fastened position of the latch the whole device is such as to possess the necessary strength to withstand any strains to which it is subjected. Also, I am enabled to employ a larger and stronger pin 11 since the fastening of the pin is not dependent on the resiliency of the pin.
In Fig. 4 the latch 17 has an integral pivot'18 instead of being secured by a separate pivot pin.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without deparclaim as new, and desire to' secure by Letters Patent:
