To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. JnNsnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transrnission-Shift-Device Retainers and Locks, of which the following is a specification.
Motor vehicle transmissions as at present constructed employ suitable devices to engage the gear shifters so that the shifters their adjusted position,
mission another device for precluding movement of one of the shifters during such time as the other shifter is moved from its neutral position. ihese separated constructions entail considerable expense in the manufacture of transmissions, and it is one of the principal objects of the present invention to combine these devices in a simple construction and to provide means assoc1- ated withthem for positioning to lock the shifters in their set position whereby movement of the shifters by unauthorized persons is precluded during such time as they are locked from. movement.
With the above mentioned and other ohthe invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a view in vertical section of the preferred embodiment of my invention illustrated in connection with a rotatable locking bolt.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts,1 indicates a transmission case or wall member formed with parallel bores 2 therein, within each of which is mounted for longitudinal sliding movement a gear shifting device 3, illustrated in the drawings in the form of rods. Each of said devices is rality of stops corresponding to the neutral and speed positions of the transmission gears and said stops are adapted .to lie facing each other as in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The stops are formed preferably with inwardly beveled walls 5 and the neutral or center stop has associated therewith, preferably in alinement with the same, a recess 6, also provided with inwardly beveled side walls.
The member 1 is provided with a bore 7 therein disposed preferably at right angles to and intersecting shifter devices 3, the outer end of said bore 7 adapted to be closed by any suitable mechanism, a threaded plug being illustrated. Positioned within the bore 7, between the shifter devices 3, are suitable retaining lugs 8 provided at their outer ends with tongues 9 adapted for reception within the stops 4 of the shifter devices 3, said tongues having beveled surfaces to correspond with the walls 5 of the stops 4. The lugs 8 are of sui'licient length to permit the movement of one inwardly during such time as the longitudinal movement of one of the shifter devices 3 causes a removal or displacement of the tongue 5) from its cooperating stop 4.
A coiled spring 10 received at its opposite ends in a shouldered bore 11, one formed within each of said lugs 8, forces said lugs apart and yieldably retains the tongues thereof in engagement with the stops 4 positioped opposite the same. The bore 11 extends through the lugs 8, as in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, and within the same is slidably mounted an interlocking member or pin 12 formed with conical ends 13, said pin being of such length as to be received at one end within one of the recesses 6, associated with the neutral stop of one shifter device on the movement of the other shifter device to a position to cause said neutral stops to be moved from a position opposite each other, thus locking one shifter device from movement during such time as the formed with a pin-- the bores 2 for the till other shifter device is in a position to cause power transmission between the gears of the transmission. mechanism.

n the modified construction illustrated in Fig. 3, a longitudinal movable locking bolt 25 is ein iloyed, the same having a conical lower end 26, which,.when depressed, cooperates with the beveled faces 27 formed on the inner ends of the retaining lugs 8.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new and desire to protect by Lettors Patent is 1. In combinatio with a pair of spaced movable'shiit'tcr devices provided in their ad jacent surfaces with stops, :1 pair oispring pressed retaining lugs positioned between said devices for engagement at their outer ends with said stops to retain said rods in their set position and their inner ends lying adjacent each other, and a lock controlled rotatable bolt for separating the said lugs to retain same in engagement with said stops when it is desired to lock saiddeviccs in their set position.
2. In combination with a pair of spaced movable shifter devices provided in their ad g'acent surfaces with steps, a pair of spring essee? pressed retaining lugs positioned between the same for engaging said stops to retain said shifter devices in their set position, and
a lock controlled bolt capable of positioning between the inner ends of said lugs to force the same outwardly and into coiiper'ati'on with said stops to lock said shifter devices in their set position.
I In combination with a pair of spaced movable shifter devices adapted for selec- -7 tive operation and each provided with a recess, said recesses adapted to lie opposite each other, an interlocking means positioned between said devices, said means adapted for engagement with the recess of one of said devices to lock said device from movement on the operation of the other device to move its recess from a position opposite the other,
and-means for locking the operated shifter device from movement when in its latter position. 4. In combination with a pair of spaced movable shifter devices adapted for selective operation and each provided with a recess, said recesses adapted to lie opposite each other, an interlocking means positioned between said devices, said means adapted for reception within the recess of one of said de-- vices to lock said device from movement on the operation of the other device to move 9 its recess from a position opposite the other recess, and means for locking said operated shifter device from operative movement when said recesses are either in or out of alinement. f
5. In combination with a pair of spaced movable shifter devices adapted for selective operation and each provided with a recess, said recesses adapted to lie opposite each other, interlocking means positioned between 195 said devices, said means adapted forreception within the recess of one of said devices to lock said device from movement on the operation of the other device to move its recess from a position opposite the other, means for retaining said operated shifter device in its set position, and means for locking said shifter device retaining means to prevent operative movement of said operated device.
6. In combination with a pair of spaced movable shifter devices provided in adjacent faces with a plurality of stops, a pair of spring pressed retaining lugs positioned between said devices for engagement with said stops to retain said devices in their set position, said lugs being each provided with a bore arranged in alinemcnt, an interlocking member freely movable within said bore, said devices being each further provided on adjaceiityfaccs with a recess adapted to normally lie opposite'each other for the reception of one end of said interlocking member on the movement of the shifting device adjacent the opposite end of said interlocking 13% locked contact with member, whereby one of said shifter devices is locked from movement on the movement of the recess of the other from normal position, and means for positioning between sai retaining lugs to force the same outwardly into positive engagement with said stops to lock said devices from operative movement.
7. In combination with a member provided with a pair of parallel spaced shifter devices movable therein, means lying between said devices and yieldably forced into contact with the same to retain said devices in their adjusted position, means capable of operation to force said retaining means into said devices to prevent operative movement thereof, and means operating in alinement with said retaining devices for precluding movement of one of said devices on the movement of the other device from normal position.
8. In combination with a member pro-,. vided-with a pair of spaced shifter devices independently movable in a parallel plane into a plurality of positions, means lying between said devices and yieldably separated to contact with the same to retain said devices when moved into and from said adjusted position, and means capable of operation to force said retaining means into locked contact with said devices to prevent operative movement thereof.
9. In combination with a member pro-- vided with a pair of spaced shifter devices independently movable in a parallel plane into a plurality of positions, means lying between said devices and yieldably separated to contact with the same to retain said devices when moved into and from said adjusted position, and a locking member extending between said means and capable of movement for separating the same to retain the outer ends thereof into locked contact with said shifter devices to prevent operati ve movement thereof.
10. In combination with a wall provided with a pair of parallel openings, a pair of parallel spaced longitudinally movable shifter devices one operating within each of said openings and provided with stops on their adjacent faces, said wall further provided with a bore opening at one side thereof and extending through one of said openings and connecting with the other whereby a passage is provided between said openings,
a pair of retaining members positioned within said passage between said shifter de vices, aspring for maintaining the same outwardly pressed in yieldable engagement with said shifter devices to retain the same in their adjusted position, and means extended between the adjacent ends of said retaining members for holding the same in locked engagement with said shifter devices to pr vent operative movement thereof.
11. In combination with a wall provided with" a pair of parallel openings, a pair of parallel spaced longitudinally movable shifter devices one operating within each of said openings and provided with stops on their adjacent faces, said wall further provided'with a bore opening at one side thereof and extending through one of said openings and connecting with the other whereby a passage is provided between said openings, a pair of retaining members positioned within said passage between said shifter devices, a spring for maintaining the same outwardly pressed in yieldable engagement with said shifter devices to retain the same in their adjusted position, means extended between the adjacent ends of said retaining members for holding the same in locked engagement with said shifter devices to prevent operative movement thereof, and means within said passage between said shifter devices for locking one of said devices from movement on the movement of the other from normal position.
12. In combination with a pair of spaced movable shifter devices provided with stops, a plurality of retaining members positione therebetween for co'ciperating with said stops, means for normally forcing said retainer devices outwardly to cooperate with said stops, said retainer devices adapted for movement toward each other on the removal of one of said stops from cotiperation'with its associated retainer device by the opera- -tion of one of said shifter devices, and
means for preventing the disengagement 0 said retainer devices from their associated stops by the movement of either of said shifter devices.
