WITNESS.-
GEORGE C. JENSEN, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
AUTOMOBILE-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1920.
Application filed June 26, 1918. Serial No. 242,000.
more commonly termed transmissions, there are employed either one, two, three or some times four shifter rods or devices, the movement of which controls the various speeds of power transmitting ratios of which the device is capable, and in some of these constructions, mainly those employing two rods, the rods or devices are set preferably in parallel spaced relation in the same horizontal plane, but this is not desirableun some types of transmissions even employing two, three or four rods or shifter devices, and in order to conserve space, it has become the custom to arrange the rods or shifter devices in staggered relation, preferably in different horizontal planes, and it is the locking of this arrangement of rods or shifter devices that the present invention is designed to accomplish, and wherein the rods or devices are alternately or successively locked from operative movement as the same are so arranged as to not be simultaneously locked by a simple construction.
\Vith the above mentioned and other ob jects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of theadvantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view ofthe preferred embodiment of my invention, illustrating particularly the arrangement of the shifter devices and with the lock means in released or unlocked position.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view, taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, illustrating more particularly the arrangement of the shifter devices.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding partsthe numeral 1 indicates a suitable gear casing or housing in which are mounted the variable speed gears 2, of any well known construction, and the same are preferably mounted to slide on a shaft 3, and are operated to move longitudinally of said shaft or longitudinally within the casing to engage with cooperating gears therein by suitable shifter devices of any suitable construction, the form illustrated being the yoke members l operating in suitable grooves formed in the shoulders 5 projecting from the sides of the gears, said yokes being carried by the respective rods (3, which in order to conserve space are arranged in different horizontal planes longitudinally of the casing 1 in parallel spaced relation, said rods being movable longitudinally of the casing and slidable in suitable bores 7 formed in a member 8, providing a guide therefor, and secured to the casing in a hereinafter described manner.
Positioned intermediate the inner end of the member 8 and the wall of the casing 1, through which the rods 6 extend, is a suitable lock casing 9 provided with bores 10 adapted to aline with the bores 7 and through which the rods 6 are slidably mounted, the casing being secured. to the housing 1 by suitable bolts 11, which also secure the member 8 to the wall of the member 1. The casing 9 is provided. intermediate the bores 10 therein, and at right angles thereto, with a suitable recess or bore 12, intersecting said bores 10, the upper end of said recess or bore being enlarged and forming a chamber 13 open at its upper end.
Within the chamber 13, and adapted to eX- 1 tend within the recess or bore 12, is a longitudinally movable locking bolt 14 having an enlarged head 15 at its upper end in which is mounted the laterally disposed latch 16 capable of inward movement to unlocked position on the rotation of a locking barrel 1'? controlled by a suitable key operated lock mechanism 18 mounted in a recess in the upper end of the head 15.
A spring 19 forces the latch 16 outwardly and on the depression of the bolt 14, is received in a recess 20 in the side wall of the chamber 13.
' The upper end of thecasing 9, adjacent the enlarged head 15 of the locking bolt, is provided with a vertical groove 21, through which projects the operating handle 22, extended laterally from said head 15, said handle providing a guide for the bolt during the movement thereof.
A, suitable coiled spring 23, positioned between the underside of the head 15 and surrounding the bolt'let, is retained under pressure by a suitable washer 24 resting on a collar 25 projected inwardly into the chamber 13, and thus automatically restores the bolt 14 to unlocked position on the withdrawal of the latch 16. The lower or looking end of the bolt 23'operating within the guide 12 is preferably receivable, on being I depressed, in suitable notches or grooves 26 formed in adjacent faces of the respective rods 6, whereby on the depressing of the bolt 14: the rods are selectively engaged, and thus alternately or successively locked from operative movement.
The body herein referred to as being provided with openings for varying the gear shift devices or rods may be formed in the gear. case if so desired and during the manufacture of the case.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is An automobile motor transmission lock comprising in combination with a transmission gear shift device, of a supporting secting said opening and the other end of Wl'UCh opens at one end of said member, said bore provided in its side wall near its upper open end with a longitudinally disposed slot, a locking bolt within said bore and capable of longitudinal movement therein, said bolt being provided with an enlarged head, a spring for normally maintaining the head of said bolt projected outwardly from the open end of said bore, said bolt adapted for manual depression to engage said gear shift device and lock the same from movement, an operating handle extended through said slot and connecting with said enlarged head for preventing axial rotation of the bolt within said bore, a latch carried by the enlarged head of said bolt for projecting laterally beyond one side thereof and adapted on the depression thereof for engaging within-a recess in said body, and lock-controlled means seated within said head and cooperating with the latch for releasing thesame, said latch and lock controlled means being movable longitudinally with said bolt.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of a subscribing witness. I
GEORGE C. JENSEN.
