To all whom t 'may concern Be it known that I, BENNo voir EIGEN, a citizen of .the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Hasps; and I do hereby declarel the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artI to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in hasps; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to various improvements in hasps of that class for use with bags of the several kinds, with suitcases and the like, and with trunks.
The present invention has for i-ts principal objects to provide a novel and simply constructed hasp comprising a main body provided with a shell-like member or chambered element, the side-members of which are shaped so as 'to providevpintle-receiving ears, said shell-like member or chambered element -being also provided with a curvedor hookshaped portion, and a haspanember or lockengaging element provided with pintle-receiving ears, all of such construction and arrangement, that the actuating spring which `is used therewith and which encircles the pintle is entirely concealed, so as to obviate an unsightly appearance of the fro-nt face of the hasp.
The invention has for its further object to provide a novel arrangement of the actuating spring with relation to said main body and its shell-like member or chambered element and the said hasp-member or lock-enas to'provide a strong and efiicient arrangement and disposition of the spring, to prevent weakening or breaking of the spring; and, furthermore, to shape the pintlereceiving side-members of said shelllike or chambered element in such a manner, that they will act as stops to arrest and limit the outward as well as the inward movement of the hasp-member when released from its engagement with the lock-mechanism, and 'will cause it to stand, under normal conditions, in an angular and outwardly eXtend ing relation to the vertical face of the main body of the device.
Other objects ofthe present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
`W ith the various objects of the present inventlon in view, Jthe said invention consists in the novel hasp hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally em bodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which forms an essential in Said Fig. 2 the disengaged relation of the hasp-element being also indicated in dotted outline.
Fig. 3 is a rear face view of the hasp, Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the same, said section being taken on line 4.-4 in said Fig. l; and Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the hasp, said section being taken on line 5-5 in said Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow m.
Similar characters of reference are employedin the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates y the complete hasp, the same comprising a main body 2, which may be of any suitable marginal configuration, and which is provided with suitably disposed perforations, as 3, for the reception of the usual fastening rivets,pins, or the like. Extending from the lower marginal edge of the said main body 2 is an outwardly extending part, as 4, which terminates in a forwardly projecting faceportion 5. Upon the rear face or back, the said main body 2 may be formed with a marginal shoulder or projection, as 6, surrounding all the marginal portions of the said main body, except the central portion of the lower marginal portion of the said main body, where the said shoulder or projection y6, terminates in a pair of members or eleto the plane of the forwardly projecting face-portion 5, a shell-like member or chambered element is provided, as will be clearly evident.L The said members or elements and 8 which are also formed with holes or perforations, as 9, see Fig. `2 of the drawings,
thus provide pintle-ears or lugs, in whichl the respective ends of a pin or pintle 10 are suitg ably secured, the said pin or pintle extending laterally between the said ears or lugs,- and beneath a centrally disposed curved or hook-shaped member 12 which extends from the marginal edge-portion 11 of the said face-portion 5, substantially as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawings.
The reference-character 13 indicates a hasp-element or vlock-engaging member of any suitable marginal configuration, the said member or element being provided with a rearwardly extending hasp-lug, as 14, or other suitably formed lock-mechanism engaging means. Upon its upper edge-portion, the said member 12 is cutaway, as at 15, and as at 16, and is provided with a pairy of inwardly bent members, as 17, which provide pivot-lugs or ears suitably mounted upon the previously mentioned pin or pintle 10. As s own more particularly in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, the said ears or lugs 17 are suitably disposed in the spaces between the said members or elements 7 and the hookshaped member 12, with the edge face-portions of said members or elements 7 in registration with the respective cut away portions 15, so as to practically provide'a complete closure, except for the pivotal connection between the various parts. Encircling that portion of the pintle directly beneath the hookshaped element or member 12 is a coil-spring, as 18, one end-portion 19 of which is passed through a recessed or cut away part 20 in the edge of one of the said ears or lugs 17 and bears directly'upon the back or rear face of the hasp-element or lock-engaging member 13, .as shown in said Fig. 3 of the drawings. The opposite end-portion 21 of said spring18 extends across the chambered part formed by the elements 4 and 5, having preferably a curved or bent end-portion, as 22, which extends over and bears u on the back or rear face of the said main Iliody 2, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
As shown in Fig. 2 of thev drawings, the
previously mentioned pintle-ears or lugs 7 and8 are of elongated configuration, as at 23, which act as stops, so as to limit the' swinging movement ofthe hasp-element or lock-engaging member 13 in the direction of the arrow y shown in said Fig. 2, against f the edge-portions 24 of which the surfaceportions 25 of the said member 13 are brought into arresting contact, and, if desired, the said ears or lugs 7 may be cut away, as at 26, thereby insuring a more positive stop.
The action and operation of the connected parts hereinabove described will readily be understood from an inspection ofthe several figures of the drawings and any further description ofthe same is therefore deemed unnecessary.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various parts, as well as in thedetails of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification. Hence', I 'do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as set forth in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the ,exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. A has comprising a main body having an outwar ly and forwardly extending portion formed with perforated side-members located in planes at right angles to the plane of the face of said main body, an inwardly projectin hook-shaped member connected with an extending from said outwardly and forwardly extending portion, a pintle having its endortions mounted in the perforations of said side-members, said pintle extending beneath said hook-shaped member, a hasp or lock-engaging element hinged upon said pintle, and a coil-spring mounted upon said pintle and concealed beneath said hook-shaped member, said spring having its respective end-portions in engagement, respectively,vwith the back ofvsaid main body and the said hasp orv lock-engagin element. 2. A hasp comprisin a main ody havingan outwardly and orwardly extending portion formed with perforated side-members located in planes at right angles tothe plane of the face of said main body, an inwardly v projecting hook-shaped member connected with and extending from said outwardly and forwardly extending portion, a pintle having its end-portions mounted in the perforations 'of said side-members, said pintle vextending beneath said hookshaped member, a hasp or lock-engaging element, pintle-receiving lugs connected with said hasp or lock-engaging element for hinging the same upon said pintle, one of said lugs having a marginal cut away portion, and a coil-sprin mounted u on said pintle and concealed eneath sai hook-shaped member, said spring having one end-portlon mounted in the cut away portion of the said pintle-receiving 'lug and extending therefrom into engagement with the rear face of said hasp orlock-engaging element, the other end-portion of said sprin bearing upon the rear face of Said main dy.
3. A hasp comprising a main body having a chambered element connected therewith, pintle-'receiving lugs extending from said chambered element and forming `the sides thereof, said lugs being of elongated coniguration to form stops, a pintle connected with said lugs, a hasp or lock-engaging element mounted upon said spindle, said hasp Aor lock-engaging element having portions adapted uto be ought into arresting engagement with the stop-portions of said pintle-receiving lugs, and ga coil-'spring mounted upon said pintle, said spring having its respective end-portions in engagement, respectively, with the back of said main body and the said hasp or lock-engaging element.
4. A hasp comprising a main body having a chambered element connected therewith, pintle-receiving lugs extending from said chambered element and forming the sides thereof, s'aid lugs being of elongated configuration to Aform stops, a pintle connected with said lugs, and an inwardly projecting hook-shaped member connected with and extending from said chambered element, said pintle extending beneath said hookshaped member, a' hasp or lock-engaging element hinged upon said pintle, said hasp or lock-engaging element having portions adapted tol be brought into arresting enga ement with the stop-portions .of said pint ereceiving lugs, and a coil-spring mounted upon said pintle and concealed beneath said hook-shaped member, said spring having its respective end-portions in engagement,
respectively, with the back of said main body and the said hasp or lock-engaging element.
5. A hasp comprising a main body hav- 'ing a chambered element connected therewith, pintle-receiving lugs extending from said chambered element and forming the sides thereof, said lugs being of elongated configuration tc form stops, a pintle connected with said lugs, and an inwardly projecting hook-shaped member connected with and extending from said chambered element, said pintle extending beneath said hook-shaped member, a hasp or lock-engaging element, pintle-receiving lugs connected with said hasp or lock-engaging element for hinging the same upon said pintle, one of said lugs having a marginal cut away portion, said hasp or lock-engaging element also having portions adapted to be brought into arresting engagement With the stopportions of said pintle-receiving lugs of said chambered element, and a coil-spring mounted upon said pintle and concealed beneath said hook-shaped members, said spring having one end-portion mounted in the cutaway portion of said pintle-receiving lug of the hasp or lock-engaging element, and extending therefromvinto engagement with the rear face of said hasp or lock-engaging element,v the other end-'portion of said sprin bearing upon the rear face of said main In testimony that I' claim the -invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of April, 1918.
