HYMAN FREEDMAN AND NATHAN M. FREEDMAN, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS T0 DAVOPLANE BED COMPANY, A CORPORATION 0F ILLINOIS.
DAVENPORT-BED STRUCTURE.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, HYMAN FREEDMAN and NATHAN M. l1`nEEnMAN,-citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of 5 Chicago, county of Cook, and vState of Illisfto form a bed.
The principal object of our present improvement is to secure such a bed structure which is capable of being stored in a very small space or conversely to secure a larger bed for a given size of storage space within the sofa or davenport, and a second object of our present invention is to secure a structure of maximum sturdiness and dependability. This latter object, as will be hereafter seen, is largely accomplished by providing a structure in which the main supporting standards which carry the bed may be attached to and carried by the main sofa or davenport frame structure instead of to the hinging portion of the seat 'of the sofa or davenport. lVe believe that this has not heretofore been done without materially lessening the size of bed which could be installed in a sofa or davenport of a given size.
We attain the above objects by means of the structure illustrated in the accompanyv ing drawing, in which,-
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a sofa or davenport, the near end being cut away, and our bed structure being installed therein and being shown in fully extended or open posltion.
Fig. 2 is a View similar to Fig. 1, our bed structure being shown in semi-folded position.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of a fragment of our bed structure, showing the means for hingy ing the hinged portion of the sofa seat and the means for hinging the inner and adjacent sections of the bed structure and the main mounting or means for securing the bed to the sofa or davenport.
Fig. 4 is a plan of the structure shown. in Fig. 3.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application mea am? 15, 191s. serial No. 97,688.
Fig. 5 is a plan of one side of an embodiment having three large sections and two small connecting sections, the upper part of the frame bein cut away.
The sofa or avenport, in which our bed structure is installed, consists of a back, l, and sides, Qqsecured to said back and extending forwardly therefrom. The sides, 2, may be, and generally are, extended suflieiently above the seat to form the usual arms. In view of the fact that with our present form of bed it is only necessary to hinge the top of the seat, a substantial front board, 3, may beemployed to rigidly connect the forward ends of the sides, 2, and'thereby secure a much stronger main davenport sofa structure.
The hinged portion of the seat, 4, which is shown in Fig. l in open position, is se-v cured to the main portion of the davenport or sofa structure by the U-shaped links, 5, the ends whereof are respectively pivoted to the forward inner ends of the sides, 2, and thesides of the hinged portion of the seat, 4. The links, 5, are given this U-Shaped form to permit their ends to be secured below the respective edges of the parts to which they are attached (as viewed in Fig. u1)', and also to provide room for upholstery upon the forward portion of the hinged portion of the seat, should that be desired.
The forward ends of the links, 5, are provided with an extension, 6, to which is pivoted a link, 7, the opposite end of which is pivoted to a leg, 8, the upper end of which leg is pivotally carried by a bracket, 8, mounted upon the end of the movable seat member opposite the hinge, 5, so that when the hinged portion of the seat, 4, is opened up, the leg, 8, is extended to support the structure 1n open position, and when the hinged portion of the seat, 4, is folded into closed position, the leg, 8, is folded beside the same. The commencement of this operation is shown in Fig. 2.
Supplementing the links, 5, as a means of connecting the hinged portion of the seat, 4, with the main portion of the sofa or davenport structure, are the links, 9, the forward ends of which are pivoted to laterally projecting pins, 10, extending from plates, 11, secured to the sides of the hinged portion, 4, of the seat. The rearwardly extending portion of the links, 9, have a horizontally extending flange, 12, which slides ysmoother, and superior connection between the hinged portion, 4, of the seat and the v main davenport or sofa structure.
INSl
4The folding bed frame structure. consists of a plurality of large or main sections and one or more small connecting sect1ons, the head and foot sections or outside sectlons of which are each formed of a side rail 14, and end rails 15, 15. When an intermedlate large frame section is employed, it consists of end rails 15*1 only. A spring fabric is secured to the rails of the respectlve tinuous and constitutes the yielding part of the bed bottom which is adapted to fold inv three (or five) sections to form a clothes receptacle under the sea-t. v
The end rails of the respectivelarge frame sections are preferably united by pivotin the adjacent ends to links 16 and 17 whic constitute short frame sections. This construction is employed for the purpose of securing space between the large sectlons when folded so as to house the bedding.-
In cases where a short sofa or davenport is desired, aisuitable length of bed is secured by providing three large and two small sections to the bed structure, but when the sofa is sufliciently long to afford the necessary length for a bed, but one small and two largeysections are necessary. Each section may; be regarded as comprising the frame part in combination with the corresponding part of the yielding body fabric. The manner in which we install the bed structure in the sofa or davenport structure by which we can mount a larger bed structure in a given size of sofa or davenport, is as follows Extending upwardly from near the ends of the front board, 3, are standards, r18, to the tops of which are pivoted the ends of the plates or brackets, 19, to the opposite ends of which plates are rigidly secured the end rails, 15a, of the intermediate bed section, if three bed sections be employed, or the end rails, v15, of the outer section if but two bed sections be employed. As will be clearly seen, this bracket 19 is L-shaped and includes an offset portion or short-arm to which the connectlng pivot is secured, so that said'bracket throws the intermediate or outer section, whichever may be secured to it, farther out when the bed is unfolded and permits the employement of a larger bed structure for a given size of sofa or davenport, said portion or arm being disposed toward the short employed which serves to ease the action of the bed in reaching fully open position and to assist when closing the structure is commenced.
The intermediate large section, when three large sections of bed are employed, or the outer section when but two large sections are used, is secured to the hinged portion, 4, of the seat by the links, 22, pivoted to the end rail of the section and having a slot, 23, in the other end thereof through whlch extends a headed pin, 24, projecting from the side of the hinged portion, 4, of the seat. Y
When three large sections of the bed are employed, it is desirable to employ"awtrans-v verse brace,'25, between the hinge'links, 17, and we have found it desirable also to provide an additional leg, 26, pivoted lat its upper end to the outer portion of the outer end ra1l. This leg is automatically operated by a link, 27, connecting the same to the forward end of the hinge plate, 17. Also when a bed of three sections is employed, it is desirable to provide a latch,
- 28, for securing` the outer section upon the intermediate section when these sections'are folded together, so that they may both be folded upon the inner section.
.What wey claim as new is 1. In a davenport comprising a main frame having sides the ends of which are respectively rigidly connected by a back and front, a seat hingedl to said main frame, a bed comprising a plurality of pivotally connected sections including an innermost section and a large outward section foldable thereon, and means for mounting said bed upon said frame and seat including standards rigidly secured to and arising from said main frame and brackets secured4 to said outward section, each of said brackets having an offset portion pivotally secured.
to its'respective standard and disposed rearwardly when the bed is extended, whereby in unfolding the device a greater outward throw of the second-mentioned section is attainable. 4
2. In a davenport comprising a main frame having sides the ends of which are respectively rigidly connected by a back and front, a seat hinged to said main frame, a bed comprising a pluralityof pivotally connected sections including a vertically movable innermost section and a large outward l section foldable thereon, l and means for mounting said bed upon said frame and seat including standards rigidly secured to and State oflllinois, this 27th day of April,
arising from the front member of said main frame and brackets secured to, said outward section, each having an offset portion pivotally secured to its respective standard, said portions being offset rearward when the device is unfolded and vice versa.
