BATHING- 0R WASHING ATTACHMENT FOR/INFAN TS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
Application filed March 28, 1918. Serial No. 225,146.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY C. VANDERHOOF,
This invention has reference, generally, to
improvements in bathing devices or apparatus; and, the present invention relates, more particularly, to a novel device in the form of a support which is to be used with the usual form of bath-tub, or other devicelcontaining water, for washing infants and small children. 1.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply constructed device or apparatus for use in conneotion'with a bath-tub, or other container of water, which is to be detachably' mounted upon the edges or sides of the tub or the like, and upon which device the infant or child to be washed is placed, the washing or bathing device, when thus ar- ,ranged, being of such height that the infant or child is not placed within the water in the tub and the mother or attendant is not compelled to stoop over into a low and uncomfortable position during the washing or bathing operation, both to the comfort of the mother or attendantand the safety of the infant or child.
The present invention has for its further object to provide a washing or bathing device or apparatus of the general character hereinafter more particularly set forth,
which is readily mounted upon the edges or sides of the usual bath-tub for use, but is detachable from the bath-tub, whenthe tub for the usual bathing purposes. Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.
With the various objects of the present invention inview, the said invention consists,
65 primarily, in the novel washing orbathing and exact descriptlon of the,
device or apparatus ticularly set forth and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which 2-- Figure 1 is a plan View of the said washing or bathing device or attachment for bathtubs, or the like, illustrating one embodiment of the principles of the present invention, said view showing the device or attachment mounted upon the edges or sides of the bathtub which is also shown in plan in said view.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a fragmentary portion of the bath-tub, with the washing or bathing attachment mounted upon said tub and shown in said elevation.
'Fig.- 3 is a transverse vertical section of said portion of the bath-tub, said section'being taken on line 3-3 in said Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow 00, the washing or bathing attachment being illustrated in end elevation; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section, taken on line 4-4 in said Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a slightly modified form of washing or bathing device or attachment, and a bath-tub upon the edges or sides of which the said attachment is mounted.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates the usual form of bath-tub, and 2 the longitudinally extending sides thereof.
The washing or bathing device or attachment, which 1s to be detachably mounted upon the upper edges 3 of the said sides 2, is generally indicated by the reference-character 4, and the same comprises-a pair of latera'lly extending end-members or boards, as 5 and 6, connected by a pair of longitudinally extending side-members or boards 7 and 8, said end- members 5 and 6, being provided with suitably formed and downwardly extending supports or legs, as 9, which are preferably curved at the lower ends, as at 10, so as to properly fit the contour of the edges 3 of the sides of the bath-tub, to mount the said device or attachment above the tub and against accidental displacement from the sides of the tub when placed thereon, as will hereinafter more par be clearly evident from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings. F
Suitably mounted and secured in the space between the said end-members or boards 5 and 6 and the side-members or boards 7 and 8 is a supporting screen, as 11, which may be a wire-mesh material, as here shown, but may be of any other suitable material or construction, as will be evident.
Secured to the outer faces .of the said sidemembers or boards 5 and 6, in any Wellknown manner, and preferably by means of brackets 12, as shown, are suitably formed and suitably shaped shelves, as 13 and 14, for the placing thereon of'towels, soap, and other bathing or Washing utensils, each shelf being usually provided with an annular flange 15.
Referring now to the construction represented in Fig. 5 of the drawings, it Will be seen, that I have dispensed with one of said shelves, as 14, and in lieu thereof I have suitably secured to the laterally extending endmember or board 6 a suitably constructed towel-rack, as 16. Y
From the foregoing description of my present invention it will be' seen that I have devised a practical and simply constructed device or attachment for use with the usual bath-tub, the infant or child, after suitable toweling or other cushioning means has been arranged upon the supporting means or screen 11, being placed thereon, to be washed or bathed both with comfort to the child, as well as to the mother or attendant.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification. Hence, I do not confine my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the said devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact constructions of the parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. A bathing or washing attachment for use with bath-tubs, and the like, comprising a frame-like structure consisting of Vertically disposed and longitudinally extending side-members'and vertical end-members extending laterally between and secured to said side-members so as to form an open frame, a supporting means for the placing of an infant or child thereon, said supporting means being disposed between said side-members and said end-mei'nbers, and standards extending from said end-members for detachably mounting said attachment upon the edges or sides of the bath-tub, or the like.
2. A bathing or washing attachment for use with bath-tubs, and the like, comprising av frame-like structure consisting of vertically disposed and longitudinally extending,
side-members and vertical end-members extending laterally between and secured to said side-members so as to form an open frame, a perforate supporting means for the placing of an infant or child thereon, said supporting means being disposed between said sidemembers and said end-members, standards extending from said end-members for detachably mounting said attachment upon the edges or sides of the bath-tub, or the like, and a shelf connected with each end-member.
In testimony that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of March, 1918.
ROY O. VANDERHOOF.
