FOOD-ORDER CARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
Application led January 8, 1918. Serial N o. 210,823.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Dioivr'siii WoRoNzorF, a citizen-of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Food- Order Cards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact speciication.
This invention relates to menu and order cards for lunch rooms and restaurants, and has for its objects to save food, time and other incidental expenses* While the invention may be used in hotels and other public eating houses, for specific Occasions, it is especially adapted for private lunch or dining rooms, as those in factories, stores or other business houses which have adopted the modern idea of feeding their own employees. In such establishments it has been found that considerable waste of food results from not knowing before hand just what kinds or articles of food each individual wishes to eat and what foods are not desired on accountV of individual tastes or preferences. Thus, when a large number of ineals'are prepared all alike, including for instance soup, bread and butter, meat, vegetables, coffee and dessert, some of the persons for whom they have been prepared may n ot want soup, others may not eat butter, still others may not drink coffee, for example,
and the portions of these articles may be wasted. It is the aim of this invention to avoid this waste, conserveV the food, and eliminate unnecessary expense of printing menus and order blanks. Y
The invention contemplates the provision of menus and order blanks to be placed on each table and marked in advance so as to show just how many portions each article on the menu are desired and will probably be eaten. Forinstance, in a factory where only lunches are served, the menus and order blanks for the next day will be placed on the tables at each meal and each individual will check the articles he prefers to have the next da 4 separate order blankmay be provided for each individual or for each table, if the latter are not too large. blank bears a series 'of' numbers opposite each article of-food, corresponding to the location or numbers of the Seats at the tables, so that each guest may check his seat -number opposite the foods desired;` The menu may befdivided into sections each cona all meals.
Each order taining one or more articles of food, and an election may be permitted between or among groups in the same section. Each article on the menu is preferably numbered so that the 4collective orders to be sent to the kitchen, commissary, or culinary department may be made out more quickly by giving the total number of orders or portions of each article desired in terms of the corresponding numerals instead of the names of the foods.
To reduce the cost of printing the menus may be printed separate from the order blanks, the former being different for each meal while the latter may be the same for The order blanks may be printed on a sheet or card large enough to permit the menus to be pasted or otherwise attached thereto opposite the corresponding food numbers, or the order blanks may be on separate smaller sheets or cards and the menus be exhibited in any suitable way on each table or at some convenient place in sight of the persons seated at several tables.
Where the tables are small, the order blanks may have all of the seats indicated thereon, but where the tables are larO'e it is preferable to provide separate order blanks for different groups of seats, as for instance for the seats on each side of the table. The order blanks may contain other. indicia for the convenience of the proprietor, such as rules for keeping track of absentees, and means for the guests to indicate in advance when they expect to be v away. The number of the tables and the number of each clerks lunch ticket may also be indicated on the order blank.
The preferred embodiment of the invention will be hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and the novel features of the invention will then bel defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several Vviews y Figure l is a plan view of a combined `order blank and menu card constructed inh accordancewith this invention.
Iig. @is a planj view of an order blank printed separate from the menu but, on a sheet, large enough to permit said menu t0 'be pasted or otherwise fastened thereto yas so the numbers of lthe articles on the menu will correspond and be opposite to the similar numbers on the order blank.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a separate menu adapted to be secured to the card shownv in Fig. 2 or to a suitable support as suggested in Fig..9.
Fig. 4C is a diagrammatic view of a table having six places or seats.
Fig. -5 is a similar view of a larger table having twelve places or seats.
Figs. 6 and 7 are broken views of modied forms of order blanks for use with the larger table shown in Fig. 5.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of a separate order blank, andV Fig. 9 is an elevation of a separate menu card mounted on a suitable stand.
Referring first to Fig. 1, the order blank and menu may be printed together on the same sheet or card, as there shown. The order portion 1 contains a plurality of rows of seat numbers 2 arranged one below another forming a series of columns corresponding in number to the seat numbers. rlhe order blank illustrated in Fig. 1 is den signed to be used for tables having six seats, as indicated in Fig. 4, and the seat numbers are from l to 96. preferably arranged from left to right as follovvs: 1,77 (8,77 45777 2,77 (64:37 H1161 C6777 correspond to the arrangement of the seats at the table, Fig. Il, all the odd numbered seats being on one side of the table and all the even numbered seats being at the other side of the table. The saine arrangement of seat numbers applies to all the several rows thereof which are preferably separated by horizontal rulings 3, the said seat numbers in each row being separated by vertical rulings 4. The three odd seat numbers on the left may be separated from the three even seat numbers on the right by a double ruling 5.
Certain of the horizontal rulings between adjacent rows of seat numbers are made heavier than the others, as at 6, to denote-` the divisions, courses, orparts of the menu 7 which is arranged at one side 'of the order blank and over which the heavy horizontal rulings 6 extend. The menu is also ruled with horizontal lines 8 constituting continuations of rulings 3, and between these lines 8 are printed the names of various articles of food included in each particular meal, said foods being grouped between the heavyV horizontal rulings'according to courses, or
the like. To ailord a convenient means of referring to the courses or groups of articles of food, as in notices restricting the. choice to a` certain number of articles in any of said courses or groups, they are'designated by the other suitable way, and these designating Said seat numbers are blankspaces 9 between the order andmenu parts of the blank and between the heavy horizontal rulings ..6 which extend across both of saidl parts. The spaces between the horizontal 4rulings 8 of the menu part are numbered consecutively at one side thereof, as at 10, so that each article of food on the menu will have a definite number to be used instead of its name in making up total orders to be sent to the kitchen or commissary department. The spaces between the rulings 3 on the order part of theblankare correspondingly numbered, as at 11, so that when the order and menu are used separately, ias illustrated in Figs.- 8 and 9, the order blanks may be marked bythe numbers of the articles of food which are printed onvtlie separate menus.
In addition to the `order and menu parts, the compositeblank-illustrated in Fic: 1 may contain instructionsA for marking the order, as at 12, a notice as to the choice allowed between the Vfoods in the several parts orcourses, as at 13, spaces 14, 1,5 and 16 for the clerks lunch ticket number and initials, and his absence notice, or the like, a
`space 2() for rules and sections 17, 1S and 19 punched in the table space 19. Thenumbers given the tables in this space are purely arbitrary andany system -of numbering may be employed. In the space corresponding to his seat number each clerk or guest should write his initials in the subdivision 15 as a means of identification. In corresponding spaces in subdivision 14, the clerks ticket number may be written, and in correspond ing spaces in the subdivision 1G dates when the clerks expect to be absent may be noted.
The same arrangement maybe followed in marking the separate order'blank, Fig. 8, as in Fig. l. It ywill be understood that these auxiliary parts of the order may be changed,
added to, or some of them omitted withoutdeparting from the invention.
The order blank 1 illustrated in Fig. l is the tablecorresponding to Athefnumber A used when the tables are sm'all,1say\with six Y places or seats each, as at 21 in Fig. 4. There thetablesare large, Tas 4indicated at 22 in Fig. 5, separateordeis 23Fi0. 6*, and 24, Fig. 7, are provided for the'feven numberedl seats and oddnumbered seatsfrespec tively. `The -rows of seat numbers in oneof these orderblanks are as follows: 2, 4,7
6, 8, 10 and 12, while those on the other blank are: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11. This arrangement is to avoid making the order blanks too large or confusing to the clerks or guests. j
As suggested in Fig. 2, the order blank and auxiliary spaces may be printed on a Card vor sheet 25 having a blank space 26 for the menu which is printed on a separate sheet 27, Fig. 3, so that a different menu for each meal may be pasted or otherwise secured to the same form of order blank, thereby considerably reducing the cost of printing.
Fig. 8 shows the order blank and auxiliary spaces printed-together on a sheet 28 of suitable dimensions, and the menu 29, Fig. 9, is shown printed separately and attached to a suitable support, such as the stand or board 30 which may be mounted on the pedestal 3l, or the like, so that it may be placed on each table or at other convenient places. The stand may have the menu attached to its opposite sides or faces so that it can be seen at the same time by persons at both sides of the table.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. The combination with a menu card having a series of symbols adjacent the articles of food thereon, each of said articles of food having a different symbol, of an order card having a series of similar symbols corresponding to those on the menu card, and a series ci seat numbers opposite each of said symbols on the order card for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a menu card hav-V ing a series of symbols adjacent the articles of food thereon, each of said articles of food having a diii'erent symbol, of an order card having a series of similar symbols corresponding to those on the menu card, and a series of seat numbers opposite each of said symbols on the order card, the even numbered seats being separately grouped from the odd numbered seats for the purpose specified.
3. The combination with a menu blank having means for dividing the articles of food thereon into groups and distinguishing symbols adjacent each group, of an or- Copies of this patent may be obtained for vre cents each, by addressing the .menu blank.
4. The combination with a menu blank having means for dividingthe articles of food thereon into groups, distinguishing symbols for each groupv and different symbols for each article of food, of an order blank having corresponding symbols to those indicating the articles of food on the menu, a series ofseat numbers opposite each of said symbols on the order blank, and means on the order blank for dividing said symbols and series of seat numbers into groups corresponding to the groups or courses on the menu blank.
5. The combination with a menu blank having a series of symbols adjacent the articles of food thereon, each of said articles of food having a different symbol, of an order blank having a series of similar symbols corresponding to those on the menu blank, and a series of seat numbers opposite each of said symbols on the order blank, said order blank also having means for indicating the relay, vacant seats and table numbers.
6. The combination with a menu blank having a series of symbols adjacent the articles of food thereon, each of said articles of food havin a different symbol, means for dividing said articles of food and symbols into groups, and distinguishing symbols for said groups, of an order blank having a series of symbols corresponding to those indicating the articles of food on the menu blank, and other symbols corresponding to the group symbols on the menu blank, and a series of seat numbers opposite each of the article symbols on the order blank.
` 7. The combination with an order blank having series of seat numbers and a space oppositeJ said numbers, of a .separate menu adapted to be arranged in said space, said menu having articles of food arranged in register with each of said series of seat numbers Jfor the purpose specied.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
